Ed and Huppy Smith, the doubles pair, are at present holding down first place in the Forester doubles at the Waukegan tournament. The pair shot a total of 1192. The McHenry community high school band ranked sec (Hid in the annual North Central district contest held at the Joliet Township high school. They were surpassed only by the Bensenville high school band. The band made the trip in cars furnished by Dr. A.I. Froehlich, Dr. C.W. Klontz, Dr. R.G. Chamberlin, J.J. Vycital, Mr. Orr and Supt. C.H. Duker. Joe Peters, 22, of Chicago, a Mineral Springs subdivision summer resident, passed away at his home in Chicago as the result of a throat infection. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 14, 1949) The only school district in which great interest was shown at the annual board elections last Saturday was Wonder Lake where 232 voters went to the polls at the Harrison school. There they elected a new seven man board to replace the three members who have served the district heretofore. Mr.. Warren Howell of Evanston died unexpectedly while on a business trip in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Mr. Howell and his family resided in this community many years ago, owning^most of the land on the Fox River, North of McHenry, still known as Howell's Villa. He operated a tire shop here for many years. Mrs. Jennie Mae Richardson, commercial teacher in the local high school, accompanied members of the Stenography II class to Chicago where they visited Gregg Publishing company offices and the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial school. Many of the students are planning careers as secretaries. Girl Scouts are reminded of the Easter egg hunt which will take place at 2 o'clock on the afternoon of Monday, April 18, in the city park, sponsored by the Girl Scout Leaders club. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April. 16, 1964) i A two year old youngster narrowly escaped drowning late Friday afternoon when he' apparently wandered too near the sea wall in front of the family home and fell into Pistakee Lake. He was Daniel Reinbold, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Reinbold. A large tree at the intersection of Idyll Dell road and Rt. 31, in back of the Farmhouse tavern, was uprooted during Monday's heavy windstorm. Another huge tree suffered the same fate at the comer of Main and third streets and a display window was blown in at Holiday Liquors west of the city. Shingles were blown from < hundreds of homes. The Viscounts color guard again brought honors to their organization on Sunday when they topped twenty-two other guards in a contest sponsored by the Junior All American association in Mount Prospect. The Lecture Luncheon club will meet at noon April 29 at Shady Lane, Marengo, when Ann Varese will present the Broadway musical "Happy Hunting" accompanied by Verna Schlofner. A long illness ended April 10 in McHenry hospital for Mrs. Anthony (Evelyn) Varese, a twenty year resident of McHenry. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ficek have returned from attending a factory training school sponsored by the Duraclean company at its international headquarters in Deerfield, 111. Linda Lou Palmer of Johnsburg was awarded a blue ribbon at the Art show in Woodstock recently. Miss Palmar has never studied art and began to paint last summer. Yet her entry "Harvest Time" was one of eleven winners in a field of 200 entries.
