These things, once an institution, are lost forever, except in our memories. But, fortunate ly, some of our customs live on -- such as the fam ily portrait photograph. Customs seem to change as often as generations do, but the pleasures of family photographs always sur vive. Each succeeding gen eration is curious as to how the ancestors looked or what Mom and Dad were like as children. And, parents, too, enjoy turning the clock back and seeing how their family has grown and matured. Back in the Twenties, portrait styles tended to be formalized. Often Papa would stand next to Mama seated with the children positioned around, and ev eryone wore stern expres sions. The complexity of posing for long periods of time was enough to erase anyone's smile. The result ing photographs made al most every family look extremely serious -- but distinguished. Happily, styles changed as photographic art was further develo loped, and fi nally, people looked natu ral and relaxed in their portraits. Photographers made a professional photo • sitting an enjoyable ex perience rather than a chore. No longer did families look as if they were facing the firing squad -- and it was possible to see how handsome a couple mother and father made. With the advent of color film, portraiture took a giant step forward. Pho tographers took advantage of the new medium, and families loved having pho tos that showed them in THEN AND NOW: Over the years, portrait photographs have shown changing styles. At one time, people looked stiff and uncomfortable for the camera. Today's photographic portraits may be taken in the studio, at home or outdoors for a more relaxed, natural look. »' '• ~~-y ' Jr Make Easter Sunday A Memorable Day, Dine A' JOHN EVANS INN Rte. 14, Crystal Lake Complete Dinners Start At *3.95 We Have Homemade Rolls Call Early . Portraits were a means of preserving the memories of family life. Now, many photogra phers make pictures out of the studio. A family group portrait can be taken al most anywhere -- in the den or living room, in a neighboring wood, or even on the ski slopes. The current trend in family photos is to portray the family group as it really is. If yours is an active family, you can have your next family portrait taken in the surroundings that best reflect your personal ity .. . at the seashore or wherever. Or, if your fam ily's togetherness centers around the home, you might prefer to have your in the _ room, grow up all too quickly. A brief time with your professional photog rapher periodically will result in beautiful por traits which can help you remember how your family looked long after they've matured and left .the nest.
