The islands chosen to visit were Palm Island or Plum Island. On arrival, they found that it was too windy and too rough. The shores were really being hit with very high waves making the landing with small boats very dangerous and swimming impossible. Therefore, the travelers passed by these islands and continued south. % When a larger island comes into view, a nice bay was found where the wind was cut off and the ship sailed in and dropped anchor. Going ashore in lifeboats, the visitors found a very long stretch of fine sandy b e a c h . I t w a s f i n e f o r swimming but quite filled with something that looked like a plant but really was an animal with many tentacles which State Route 120 according to the plat thereof recorded April 24,1958 as Doc. 337444 in Book 13 of Plats, page 55 in McHenry County, Illinois, permanent index No. 15-6016-13 SECTION 2: This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage and approval as by law provided. A few were taken out and found to have a cup-like shell below. These were the same pretty shells the natives on St. Vincent island were selling for a dollar. Because of these dangerous creatures, they forgot about swimming and did a lot of cautious wading and much exploring until they ran out of beach and the lava rock came down to the shore. A few boulders of this lava rock were standing here and there on the beach and in the water. They looked like giant black eggs two stories high. They were interesting as they had many smaller rocks molded within them. An attempt was made to pry some away but they were well welded in place. Far down the beach, they found a single black native who came out to meet and talk to the visitors. The native was not accustomed to company and seemed happy to have someone to talk to but was afraid the visitors would intrude. When he found they were only going to stay for the day, he promptly got into a tiny boat and went out to the ship to beg for food. _ Kirk and some of the men explored the woods. He was cautious after having three different giant needles from cactus stuck in his foot. One of the men was swollen in spots and one eye even closed after contact with a poisonous tree. He was treated a beard ship by the doctor for several days.
