The college's headquarters will be Paris, with trips to London and the French chateaux country. Area residents are invited to participate in this course, which carries four college credits. Tour leader is Erwin C. Cornelius, instructor of French and political science at MCC. Subjects covered include contemporary social and political trends in Western Europe, art appreciation and French language. Cornelius lived and studied for three years in Europe before coming to the MCC faculty. Most of his time was spent in Paris. He now teaches political science at MCC, including both international relations and comparative government. "We will fly from Chicago to London, where the students will be escorted through the National Gallery of Art, the Tate b u i l d i n g s Westminster Abbey and the House of Parliament. The remainder of the three-day visit to London will be devoted to theatre and sightseeing," said Cornelius. Students will continue to Paris via motorcoach and English Channel Ferry. "The two-hour bus ride into Paris will give students an opportunity to see the French countryside," added Cornelius. In Paris, students will begin their investigation of European culture through a faculty- escorted visit to several museums - Cluny, the ^ouvre, Carnavalet, Musee d' Art Modern and others. "We will then tour Versailles and Chartres. A highlight of the tour will be viewing some of the Loire Valley chateaux i n c l u d i n g C h a m b o r d , Chenonceaux, Blois and Amboise," said Cornelius. Actual course work leading to college credit will be done on location in France and will be composed of seminars in three subject areas. Students may pursue study of the art of France including Renaissance art exhibited in P a r i s i a n m u s e u m s * impressionist art of Manet, Monet, Sisley, Renoir and' others, and contemporary'4. trends in art. Students will be expected to write a paper on one of these European artistic movements upon return to the United States. Those interested in social and political affairs in Europe, will attend seminars given by Cornelius. The seminars will cover current social and political trends in European relations, using France as a model for assessing the successes of the European Common Market. Students will write a paper on the French government or the European Common Market upon return. French language training will be available at all levels. For those who wish formal language training, native tutors will be available for instruction. "The language laboratory will be the streets of Paris," said Cornelius. A French language test will be administered upon return to the United States for those who participate in the French language study. (trip taken by Hugh Kirk) BEQUIA ISLAND On the way to Bequia Island, the travelers passed by several large beautiful islands, the first of which was Saba. They were told this is the one on which Robinson Crusoe (Andrew Selkirk) was marooned for many years. "Depending upon interest in the three fields of study, a participant may want to concentrate on only a portion of the total offerings. A student who has only an interest in French language, for example, need only enroll for one college credit in the language portion of the trip," said Cornelius. According to Cornelius, any interested person may register for the courses and participate in the tour. Further information may be obtained by calling Cornelius at the college (459-6800) or the MCC Office of Instruction. Kirk challenged this statement countering that he thought Crusoe was in the Pacific. This island had a special fascination for Kirk since he is a direct descendant of Crusoe. The folks in Scotland made a special trip to show Kirk the house and statue of Crusoe in Kirkcaldy and told him of his relationship which they thought he had not known before. Kirk did know for he was told by his grandfather, James Haxton, when he was a boy. Other large islands passed and viewed were St. Eustatius, St. Christopher and Montserrat. They were beautiful, mountainous and green with tropical vegetation. Bequia is a quiet island of fishermen and the travelers visited the quaint little village port and went by car to see more of the island. Also seen were many little hamlets that depend on fishing and small plots of bush beans which they raise for their living. No one hurries and they walk, wherever they go. Stores are in the houses, often just a room in front or the bottom of a two-story building. No display windows and in fact, most often, no windows. They just open shutters or doors or both. Sometimes an advertising sign can be seen inside the shop or if they are progressive, tacked to the back of the door. Inside, you may see some cans or goods on shelves and maybe even a counter. They made fine boats under the trees along the shore at their harbor town. It seemed strange to see work benches and tools all outside with no protection but the shade of the palm trees. The students of Parkland school learned the functions of the squad and how the members donate their time to save lives. legumes, which also provide good wildlife cover and food. Structures for sediment retention, erosion or water control must be designed to control erosion, including sediment and chemical runoff, from a specific problem area. A measure to control this same runoff by means of vegetative cover has also been approved for 1974 use. The use of windbreaks or shelterbreaks are applicable to farm or ranch lands in need of protection from serious wind erosion. For conserving water, preventing erosion, and reducing pollution of water or land, the reorganizing of irrigation systems is authorized. In addition to the national practices that have been adopted, two, authorities to develop additional practices, are also available. These give state and county committees the opportunity to develop, with appropriate justification, other practices needed to solve critical local conservation problems. "Individuals seeing a need for these types of conservation practices on their land, and wishing to obtain further details should contact the local county ASCS office immediately. We do encourage all interested and qualified landowners to participate in Conservation, Forestry Queries Are Answered ^'1 am sure many area farmers are interested in the conservation and forestry aspects of the new Rural Environmental Conservation program (RECP)" said Jkhmie D. Lucas, executive director of the county Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation service (ASCS). p u r t e e n n a t i o n a l conservation and forestry practices have been approved bf-. the Secretary of Apiculture. This practice, as well as the improvement of a stand of forest trees for timber protection - which is aimed at existing stands to increase the potential of the stand for production of forest products, including sawtimber and veneer logs -- are the only two projects also available under the new Forestry Incentives Program. W a t e r i m p o u n d m e n t reservoirs will require erosion control as a purpose, along with water conservation. The construction of terrace systems must provide maximum control of erosion and sedimentation from cropland, while diversions are designed for application where an erosion and sediment problem can be corrected by a single diversion facility. Permanent wildlife habitat projects must provide permanent protection to areas subject to erosion by establishing a permanent cover of trees, shrubs, grasses, and
