Community Calendnr APRIL 10 ~ LaLeche League Meeting ~ 8 p.m. McHenry Senior Citizens Club Bus Trip to Chicago Loop - - Bus Leaves McHenry State Bank Parking Lot at 8:45 a.m. With the closing of the six- week penitential season of Lent, local churches are planning Holy Week services to be climaxed by the celebration of Easter Sunday April 14. ST. MARY CATHOLIC Following a low Mass at 8 o'clock Thursday morning at St. Mary Catholic church, the Mass of Institution and Procession will be offered at 7:30 that night. There will be adoration until midnight. The Good Friday solemn liturgy and Communion will be at 1:30, followed at 7:30 p.m. by Stations of the Cross and adoration. On Holy Saturday, the solemn liturgy and blessings will take place at 7:30 in the evening. Easter Sunday Masses are scheduled at 6:30,8, 9:30, 9:45, 10:45, 11 and 12 o'clock. There will be the blessing of Easter baskets at 11:30 Saturday morning. Confession hours are 4 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, 4 p.m. and following the evening Mass Thursday, after the Friday liturgy and after evening services, and again Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. only. FAITH PRESBYTERIAN A community Good Friday service will be held Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian church, Lincoln and Chapel Hill roads. This is the sixth annual Good Friday service sponsored by the Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches of the community. The sermon, entitled "I'm Thirsty", will be preached by Ralph Smith, pastor of the First United Methodist church, and the combined choirs under the direction of Allan Cook will sing "Ave Verum" by Mozart. The special offering will go to Church World Service. There will be nursery facilities available for infants and toddlers. The Maundy Thursday rite will be a service of holy Communion. The sermon is entitled "Blood, Sweat and Tears" based on Mark 8:34-38 and the choir will sing "Let Us Break Bread Together", a spiritual arranged by Noble Cain. On Easter Sunday at 6 a.m. there will be a sunrise service followed by Communion around tables in the fellowship hall. At 7 a.m. the Session will serve breakfast. Church school will take place at 9 a.m., with a second service of worship at 10:30 a.m. FIRST UNITED METHODIST Holy Communion will be served at the Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. April 11. Good Friday Services will be a union service, at Faith Presbyterian church. The Rev. Ralph J. Smith, pastor of the First United Methodist church, will bring the message, "I'm Thirsty". Easter sunrise services will be held at 6:30, followed by breakfast served in the church dining room from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Other scheduled services on Easter Sunday will be at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Special music will be provided by the choir under the direction of John Leighty. The Rev. Smith will speak on "The Eternal Things Not Seen". There will be no church school on Easter Sunday. ZION LUTHERAN In special services during Lent, Zion Lutheran church has prepared for the new life of the risen Jesus. On Wednesday and Maundy Thursday, there will be worship with Holy Communion at 7:30 p.m. The theme; "Food for the New Life", is based on I Corinthians 10:3 and 4. The Good Friday rite is "Tenebrae", meaning "Service of Darkness", Christ's death is remembered with a tenebrae service at 8 p.m. On Easter Sunday at 6 a.m. the choir sings the cantata, "No Greater Love" by John Peterson. At 7:45 and 10:30 a.m. are celebrations of the new life with the message, "Now We Can Rise from Ruin." (Romans 6:7-11) At 9 a.m., all Sunday School members and families will worship together. Easter breakfast will be served by the church's young people from 7 to 9 a.m. ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC The Mass of the Lord's supper will be offered at 8 p.m. Holy Thursday, a concelebrated Mass followed by procession. There will be adoration until midnight. The Good Friday liturgical service will be at 2 p.m. and Stations of the Cross at 8 in the evening. The Easter Vigil Mass will be offered at 8 p.m., followed on Easter by Masses at 7:15, 8:30, 9:45,11 and 12:15. There will be an extra Mass in the church hall at 10 a.m. Confession hours are 4 to 5 Thursday, 4 to 5 and 7 to 8 Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday. There will be a communal celebration of penance at 8 o'clock Wednesday night. ST. PAUL EPISCOPAL There will be holy Eucharist at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, at St. Paul's Episcopal church. On Maundy Thursday there will be Eucharist at 8 p.m. and an all-night vigil from 9:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. Good Friday. The Friday service consists of Stations of the Cross at 8 p.m. On Easter, there will be Eucharist at 8 a.m. and Choral Eucharist 10 a.m. SHEPHERD OF HILLS Special services during Holy Week at Shepherd Of The Hills Lutheran Church, 4040 North Green St., McHenry, will begin with a service of Holy Communion Maundy Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The senior choir, under the direction of Norman Macdonald, III, will provide special music. On Good Friday, April 12, concert singer Fred Haynie from Great Falls, Mont., will present a concert of sacred music as well as a brief devotion. He is currently on tour in the state of Illinois and is accompanied in the concert by his wife, Pat. The 7:30 p.m. service will be a service of "The Lighted Cross", with the service concluding in total darkness except for the light on the cross in the chancel of the church. On Easter, April 14, an Easter sunrise service will be observed at 6 a.m. An Easter morning service will be held at 8T30 a.m. and an Easter morning festival service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Holy Communion will be offered at all three worship services Easter Sunday morning. Pastor Roger W. Schneider will speak on the theme, "Hear the TYumpets of Victory!" Special music will be provided by the senior choir at the 6 and 8:30 a.m. services. The choir will sing "The Hallelujah Chorus" and "The Lord's Prayer." Special music will be provided at the 10:30 a.m. service by soloist Mrs. Reggie Ericson. The members of the Luther league or youth group at the parish will serve an Easter breakfast after all three morning services. A large Easter Lily Cross will be built to adorn the sanctuary for the special observance of Easter. The public is invited to all services. WONDER LAKE BIBLE At the Wonder Lake Bible church, a mid-week prayer and praise hour will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Good Friday service will be at the same time. On Easter, Sunday School is Club Stocks Fish Pantry At April Meet The Fish organization, one of the projects of the McHenry Woman's club, has requested that each member bring one or more cans of food to the April 11 club meeting to help stock the Fish pantry. Those who cannot attend are asked to send the food with another member. Mrs. Gretchen Thomas, chairman of the pantry, will be at the meeting to explain how the food will be distributed and used in emergency cases. One- hundred per cent cooperation is asked.
