( Gary Fairchild, former MCHS star under Coach Bill Day, has signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a free agent after attending the try out camp. The Plaindealer sports section has given interested readers reports from time to time on Gary's progress during his four years at Augustana College where he made his mark as a tight end. In his senior year, Gary snared 25 passes good for 377 yeards and set a school record of 113 receptions during his college career. Training^ camp will start July 15 and McHenry fans will be watching for the name Gary Fairchild. Watching with special interest will be his mother, Elizabeth Fairchild, 4516 W. Sussex Drive, McHenry. She didn't give her name, but some nice lady called to tell us that Lawrence Welk would be on the air Monday night. She read our fussin' about the Stanley Cup event replacing our star on Sunday night. There are thoughful people who bring sunshine into our day. Then, there are others! Real brave like -- we wait up to Joan Brefeld's cage in the McHenry State Bank and got the laugh about our White Sox. Evie Albright at the next window took us off the hook. Evie is Petie Schaefer's daughter so you know whose side she is on-- - Went to church Good Friday and on the way out heard a familiar voice in back of us. None other than Joe Wagner. Tried to tell him we were still praying, but couldn't give him the slip. Joe doesn't believe it was the North Side streakers and freakers who upset opening day at Sox park. Oh, no! In comes Bill DeVries, fresh from Las Vegas. Bill asked for "Red". Told him Winkel didn't want to see him either. So -- on Sunday morning Herb Reihansperger hailed us as we drove along Riverside Drive to tell us how happy he was that our Sox finally won a game. Yah. He was happy. Thoreau, as he was dying, was asked if he had made his peace with God. "I have never quarreled with Him," was his reply. Some weeks back we were checking the major league records on Fred Anderson, Clyde Blackwell's cousin. Clyde also wrote to the New York News and received a nice letter with information on Ms cousin. The information was forwarded to the Statesville Record And Landmark paper in Statesville, North Carolina. It prompted a fine story on the part of Mike Owens, Sports Editor. As Al Smith used to say, "Let's look at the records". That's just what Mke did to get his story. Of course, this dates back a ways. Fred Anderson was the first major leaguer from Statesville, an area that has sent several players to the big time. THE LETTER SYSTEM Said the dean to his college professors, "Be kind to the kids who get 'A' They'll come back to our institution And succeed you as profs some day. "And also take care of those students Whose marks are 'Bs' and 'Cs' They'll send their own children back to us To get their college degrees. "And what about the others who often wind Up with 'Ds'?
