SECOND SON A son, Joseph Ryan, is being welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Marek, Jr., 7408 Parkwood Drive, Wonder Lake. Joseph was born on April 7, at Memorial Hospital for McHenry County, Woodstock. He weighed 7 lbs., 5 oz., at birth. His brother, Jason, is 2lk years old. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Quinn, Bell wood, and paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Marek, Sr., of Phoenix, Ariz. PARADE PLANS y 1974 - a year of confusion - when to celebrate Memorial Day? But whether you decide on Monday or Thursday to get out the old barbeque grill and welcome in the summer activities, set aside Sunday, May 26, for the annual Memorial Day parade, sponsored by the Wonder Lake American Legion. The parade will begin at the east side firehouse at 10:30 a.m. It was suggested to me by one of our local merchants that it would be a fine thing if more businesses (actually, if every business in Wonder Lake) entered some type of float or car, etc. in the parade to make this yearly event a day to be remembered. Think about it. BAKE SALE The Girl Scouts of Cadette Troop 420 of Wonder Lake will have a bake sale this Saturday, April 27, at the McHenry State bank from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Scouts have gained a reputation for having some really appetizing, fresh baked breads, coffeecakes, pies, brownies, etc. at their past bake sales. So, stop at the bank on Saturday and see what Aese ambitious young ladies have to offer. You may have a hard time choosing! O. Hanner) Whispering Oaks Garden club--thirty six strong (four men)--sallied off on April 16 to see Morton's arboretum. This 1500-acre collection of trees and shrubs occupies a site in DuPage county just north of Lisle where Route 53 crosses the East-West tollway. It was a gorgeous day. The sky was blue as Grecian skies. The white clouds were on special behavior and allowed no gusty wind to disturb, nor drop of rain, to pester. An eight-mile drive runs through the grounds. Here, practically every tree that has its habitat in die latitude of northern Illinois is growing. They are gathered from every part of the world. There are displays of ground cover, vistas, marsh, brook and water scenes. Birds abound. Wild flowers--spring beauties, blood root, Virginia Blue Bell (in bud), bloody butchers, and Choruses at Harrison School. We gazed right back. This sight means spring has crowded winter into the wings and off stage. The Arboretum collects woody plants fronj all over the world to evaluate their use in our area. There is a library that helps the landscaper or, flower and tree lover. You can get plants identified. You can have lunch. About ten years ago some misguided engineer, plus a politician or two, tried to run a four-lane highway through the grounds. The Garden Clubs of Illinois arose in woody wrath. Now the road hums off somewhere else and the gas fumes pollute some less precious spot. The Arboretum is open all year. It was founded by Joy Morton, the son of J. Sterling Morton who originated Arbor Day. It is this year fifty-two years old. 11 quote from pamphlet which tells you about the collection, "Magnolias: late April; spring wild flowers, daffodil and redbud; late April to early May ; crabapples, early to mid- May; lilacs and rhodo dendrons, mid to late May; fall color peak, mid to late October." Plan to go soon. This arboretum is one of the show places of our area. Back on Oakwood drive we are near Bull creek with its wildlife. On Easter, about noon (why in broad daylight I'll Registration At Johnsburg School Set Elementary School District 12 announces a registration for all local 3 and 4-year-old children. If a child turns 3 by never know) the odor of a skunk was plainly discerned by local neighbors. A little visiting granddaughter, to whom this was a new nose tickler asked, "Grandpa, what is that stinky smell?" And that naughty "granpa" said, "That, honey, is the Easter Bunny!" Dec. 1, 1974, and lives within district boundaries, he is eligible for this free service. At the time of registration, parents will be asked to fill out an information card, a short medical questionnaire, and a social history of the child. For convenience, pre-school and kindergarten registrations will be held at the same time. The dates are April 24 and 25, 9 to 11 and 1 to 3 at the Johnsburg administrative office. Registration will be alphabetically: April 24, A though E, 9 to 11; F through J, 1 to 3; April 25, K through R, 9 to 11; S through Z, 1 to 3.
