PAGE 6 - PLA1NDEALER - W ^.JN'ESDAY, MAY \, 1974 EARL WALSH So I Hear Kaneland Nips Warriors In McHenry High Relays By Dick Rabbitt 2" The Kaneland Knights barely edged the McHenry Warriors for the championship of the JflcHenry Relays on Saturday rtioming" at McCracken Field. SFhe Knights had 101 pts to 97 for the host school. This was Kaneland's 7th straight Relay {Championship, and their 4th championship this season. ^ The 9th Annual Relays was by far the most exciting of those held. With 11 of the 15 events completed only 6 pts separated the first four teams. With two events lo go McHenry Climbed to withiiytwo points of Kaneland. ^ Coach Wally Scott's Warriors put out a supreme effort. What •ihore can be asked of a group of iyoung men, who battled a great jtaneland team, and held off •(he challenge of two fine teams Geneva and Lake Forest. Three meet records were set Jfind the host school broke a -School record in winning the 880 >d relay in the time of 1:34.8. ^The Warriors also broke the tfieet record in the mile relay 'frtien they covered the distance 3n 3:33.5. Lake Forest broke the ;4 mile relay with a time of 18:52.2 and the Soph Sprint ! Medley record was broken by ;&eneva with a time of 3:49.0. 55 In congratulating the entire Warrior team, I would like to fay a special tribute to two young men who I thought did an Excellent job on Saturday. Tim ^albot and John Mclnerney anchored the mile and 2 mile relay teams, and their come from behind performance to win the relay for their respective teams was something to behold. Their gutty performance was an inspiration to the entire squad. From a vantage point in the press box I saw many contestants, but very few spectators. I would like to suggest to meet officials the possibility of holding next year's Relays on a Friday night. With a night performance I believe more parents would attend as well as track fans. This type of an event is just too good to have such few fans in attendance. You tfatch a ball game until the rain stops the action. Get up and stretch. Walk around the house. Lode out the window. Eat a few peanuts (there goes our diet again). Whoops! Brendan's little turtle has disappeared from its container. Everybody swings into action. Grandma gets a long ruler and pokes around every logical place. Brendan gets a flashlight, then tries to convince us that turtles can climb walls or hang underneath a table. Aunt Clara gets into the act and crawls under the kitchen table. She's up!. Four year old Aleen just runs from room to room. No turtle. Grandpa sits down in his easy chair. Grandma (a recognized detective) rustles some papers stacked on the floor - and what do you know? The lost is found. So, now you go back to read the new football rules for the pros. What's the use? We'll forget them by the time the season comes around again. Speaking of football, this might be as good a time as any to start our annual campaign for an enlarged press coop at McCracken Field. Hardly seems unreasonable. SPORTS EDITOR. After all, we won't need an elevator for a couple of years. At this point we are being serenaded by a little girl with a mouth organ. That helps a fellow concentrate on a column. The ball game is on again. The ball game is over Sox lost. Shoulda stood in bed. Watched the Sox game last night. Cushion night. Free cushions. What did some of those kooks do but throw the cushions out onto the field. Hope they don't get such ideas on bat night. Bicycles. Holy smokers! Never saw such racing through stop signs and cutting in front of cars. Somebody -- everybody-. PLEASE tell those kids (teenagers) the rules before one of them gets killed. A fellow walked up to our car as we started to back away from the A&W the other night. He faked us out. Never expected to see our old friend Math Laures. Says they have moved back from Florida to make McHenry their home again. They always come back. Marty Zeller and Bobby Buss each carded a 40. In this match the squad had 10 penalty strokes. On Friday they traveled to <• Antioch and won 164 to 189. Chuck Jesky had a 39, Bobby Buss another 40, and Marty Zeller had a 41. Now that the warm weather has arrived the young team is beginning to jell. Chuck Kesky is the only senior. Kenne Ludwig who is shooting in the low 40's along with Zeller who is doing likewise are juniors. Sophomore Jim Burke another low 40 shooter, and rounding out the fivesome is freshmen Bobby Buss. In the Grayslake match last week young Buss missed 4 putts of less than 18 inches, and still carded a 40. Maybe the senior member ( the Buss family should give few lessons to son Bob. The sophomore squad is als doing a great job. They no\ have won 7 matches. Bo Buenzli, Lowell Kively, Mar Herrmann, and Vic Santi ar all shooting in the low 40's fo the sophomores.
