Coe, county superintendent of schools, has been conducting spelling contests at the various community high schools throughout the county with representatives from that particular high school district participating. Each rural school teacher carefully selected her champion spellers and sent them to her district high school to take part with the best spellers of the other rural schools in that district. Bullah Bacon of the Griswold Lake school won the spelling bee for the McHenry district. John Bolgpr has been named on the re-employment committee for McHenry county with employment committee for McHenry county with five other men from the county. During the past three months the reemployment office found 135 jobs for men and women. Crops are being menaced by the continued drought which is breaking all records for this vicinity. According to Chicago records which go back to 1871, the lowest amount of rain fall ever recorded for April was in 1899 when .14 inches fell. At this time a total of fifty children were vaccinated. R.I. Overton began operation of a livery business in McHenry in 1909 and two years later began handling automobiles. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 7, 1964) Two entries were made this week in the Fiesta Day queen contest. They are Beth Marie Glysing, 16, and Lynn Saynor, 17. Both are students in the McHenry high school. McHenry's Men of Brass senior drum and bugle corps sponsored by Fox River Post No. 4600 added two more trophies to their growing list for 1964 as they took top senior and best musical unit honors at Elgin's Loyalty Day parade held Saturday. St. Mary's Catholic church was the setting for a beautiful wedding ceremony May 2 when Miss Judith E. Steadman, McHenry, exchanged nuptial vows with Mr. Robert J. Miller, McHenry. Rev. Fr. Eugene Baumhofer officiated at the nuptial rite. May 8 and 9 Northern Propane Gas company will hold NEW MEMBERS RECEIVED AT CHURCH New Members Join Church Thirty new members were received into .membership at grand opening in their new and attractive building. ' Don Virgens of McHenry is manager of the business. The business was purchased in 1962 from James Althoff and until recently was housed in a small structure on John street. The large residence on Elm street occupied for many years by Mr. and Mrs. Nick Justen was sold by the McHenry State Bank to Theodore Miller and was moved on the Miller property back of the fire house. Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, 404 North Green street, McHenry, Sunday. The new members transferred their memberships from other Lutheran congregations. At a special service of reception held within the regular 10:30 a.m. worship service, the new members came forward to the altar rail to be introduced to the other members of the congregation and to receive certificates of church membership from Pastor Roger W. Schneider. The new members stood in a receiving line at the conclusion of the service to be greeted by the regular members of the parish. BALLOON DAY Approximately 600 grade school children from the Harvard schools will gather at the city hall Thursday, May 9, at about 9:30 a.m., to release balloons to publicize Harvard Milk day.
