(Rand Rd.) I Route 120 312-587-8262 / P.O. Bok *614 ' Round Late, IB. 60073 815-385-3660 j "THE CRUEL SEA" by Nicholas Monsarrat This is the true story of two ships, one ocean and 150 men. "The Compass Rose" and "The Sorrel" were their names. The fury and the strength of the Atlantic seas is told, its treachery especially during the World War II and what men can do with the sea, while under stress aboard ship. The story begins in 1939 and the "Compass Rose" is the leading escort ship designed to meet desperate situations at sea and the 150 men aboard her. Women left at home, those they loved and some women who sometimes were glad to see the men leave. The men are the stars in this story; the heroines are the ships; the villain the cruel sea. A few of the colorful characters in this story are Lieutenant Commander G.E. Erickson, R.N.R., and a colorful character he was, for he was large in stature, tough nature, aged 42, fair haired with a touch of grey and blue eyes that wrinkled at the corners. Above all he was Commander of "Compass Rose", largest and the first of the escort ships. Erickson did not like the r e s p o n s i b i l i t y o f commandering the ship and - appointed First Lt. James B e n n e t t , R . A . N . V . R . (Australian born), in command of many jobs Erickson should have done. Bennett was tough in appearance and enjoyed the role of bully; ruddy faced, stocky figure, with a cap worn at an odd angle, he looked to be a plain seaman. Seamen Ferraby and Lockhart enter the story, and are different as night and day, personality-wise. Their colorful language helped to make the voyage interesting to other seamen. As Seaman Ferraby bid his new wife goodby she had given him encouragement for his journey. Seaman Lockhart was exploiting his escapades, and claimed to be a journalist, when actually he scratched a living for himself and at 27 years of age was one worried seaman starting on the journey. A surprising domestic drama occurs aboard ship; reflecting the untidiness ana futility of the oncoming battle among men aboard. It was Seaman Gregg who was wholly responsible for the incident. He was listed under Commander Morrell; Gregg was discovered missing at sailing time and a search party had to be sent ashore. Gregg was not to be found anywhere. Weeks later, "Compass Rose's" return, Captain JSrickson learned that Seaman Gregg was located at last. Where had the seaman been for seventeen days? Why did he miss the boat? All this is revealed when you read the "Cruel Sea". At the climax of the book the reader learns of the many "We would like for every eligible person in McHenry county to be a member of the McHenry County Educational foundation" said John W. Buckner, executive director of the McHenry County Educational foundation. "We realize that this is an ideal situation and is not going to happen but we are going to make every attempt to get all interested people to join with us in promoting the McHenry County Junior college." Buckner said that the more people who are interested in education the more the mutual benefit of the McHenry County Junior college and to the foundation. The more interest created, the more support that both of these organizations will receive, according to Buckner. This is the second in a series of articles telling morev about the McHenry County Educational foundation. As in the preceding article which told about what the foundation was, this article will be a series of questions and answers relative to how one may become a member of the Foundation. The third of the series will deal with the inner-workings of the foundation and the final - article which will appear the following week, just before the Membership Drive gets under <W>i»-early in May, will detail how one can become a member of the foundation and will also give details of the membership drive itself. Question: Who are the members of the McHenry C o u n t y E d u c a t i o n a l foundation? Answer: Any person who is 18 years or over is eligible to become a member of the McHenry County Educational foundation. It is an organization that is made up of people who are interested in education and are specifically interested in the furtherance of education beyond the high school level. This means that they are not only interested in a degree but are also interested in the vocational aspect of the Junior college. The vocational aspect of the college is geared to teach all who attend, a saleable skill upon completion of their courses. Question: How does a person become a member of the foundation? Answer: At the present time he may become a member by contacting John W. Buckner, executive director, at 95 Grant street in Crystal Lake, or by contacting any member of the board of directors of the foundation. As indicated, in the near future, a membership drive will be conducted in each town that serves the McHenry County Junior college. In this manner, it will be much easier to obtain a membership. Details of the membership drive will appear in a future issue of this newspaper. Question: What does it cost to be a member of the Educational foundation? Answer: There are three • types of membership in the E d u c a t i o n a l f o u n d a t i o n ranging from $5 to $50 to $100. Each type of membership is issued a card from the foundation. Those interested in taking out a ten-year or a life- membership, will have their cards laminated in order that they will last for a long period of time. Also persons taking out a life membership will be given a plaque that is suitable for hanging in the office or in the home which shows a picture of students walking into a college and has the name of the person taking out the life membership engraved upon the plaque. encounters the U.S.A. ships had with the enemy subs during the W3T. "Compass Rose" delivered four other ships safely to Reykjavik, Iceland. Sex is included in this novel, adventure and much 'nautical* data. RuthM. Zak Reviewer Question: Who is in charge of the McHenry County Educational foundation? Answer: There are nine members of the board of directors who are elected from the membership at large at the annual meeting which is held the second Monday in October of each year. In addition to the nine members who are elected by the membership, the president and the vice- president of thfe Junior college are ex-officio members. On Jan. 1 of this year, the board of directors employed John W. B u c k n e r , r e t i r e d superintendent of School District 155, as its executive director to aid in the investments in the Junior college which will be needed to assist them in their financing and in the provision of other buildings as listed in the first article. According to the by laws of the foundation, all members are notified of the annual meeting, and any person is eligible to become a member of the board of directors. Question: What is the relationship between the foundation and the college? « Answer: The foundation and the college work very closely together but they are two separate entities all together. Each has its own board which is independent of the other. However, prior to the foundation establishing any permanent goals for the benefit of the college, college officials and the staff are consulted and their desires are then presented to the foundation board of directors who consider them in the order of priority which they have been listed by college officials. After approval by the foundation board of directors, the list according to priorities is then presented to the McHenry county board of trustees to give approval to these projects before they are undertaken. The work of the foundation might be compared with that of a PTA whose purpose is to enrich the program by providing materials and-or buildings which the Junior college feels that it cannot afford at a particular time through state and local taxation. Should any person reading these newspaper articles or listening on the air, desire to obtain more information about the foundation, he may do so by calling 459-9218 or by dropping by the office at 95 Grant street in Crystal Lake' Children's Bookshelf LOOK WHO'S PLAYING FIRST BASE By Matt Christopher The Checkmates needed a new first base man right away, and it didn't occur to Mike Hagin that it might be a mistake to ask his new friend, Yuri Dotzen, to fill the spot. Yuri and his family had just arrived from Russia a»d Yuri had no experience in baseball. This became painfully clear the first time he played with the Checkmates and constantly flubbed plays at first base. Many of the Checkmates, especially the hotheaded catcher, Don Waner, made it plain that they were disgusted with Yuri's performance. And so Mike was in the doghouse. But there was one bright hope-- every now and then Yuri hit an incredible home run right out of the park. That was enough to encourage the Checkmates, but not enough for Don Waner, who threatened to leave the team. The story of how Yui develops into a first-rate player is an absorbing one for all sports fans. As well as an exciting baseball story, it is a highly readable account of how important sportsmanship and patience are to the game. NEW BOOKS A new joke book: "Funnier Than the First One" often a joke needs to be more than funny to be enjoyed. It needs to be presented properly. Sonny Fox, who has told his share, of jokes and who has listened to more than his share, here presents his second collection of the jokes that bring forth laughs from young people. He also includes an opening chapter that tells the would-be stand-up comic how to deliver the lines that make audiences deliver the guffaws. Now is the time to start being the life of the party. "I Was Kissed By A Seal At The Zoo " by Helen Palmer What would you do if you went to the zoo? Who would dream that the children would like to be.kissed by a seal, play ball with a lion or read to a walrus: That's what the kids wanted to do. And what's more they went to the zoo and they did it. Lynn Fayman was around with his .camera. He recorded their great adventures. So here is one of the most unusual zoo books ever published. This book, with its 199-word vocabulary, is written in words that children can understand and read all by themselves. "Look! I Can Cook" Here at last is the cookbook for aspiring young cooks who are tired of the usual hamburger, ice cream pie, gingerbread man "kid stuff syndrome. The brilliantly colored pictures clearly show every simple step in the m a k i n g o f o v e r f i f t y international recipes, from an impressive French cheese souffle to a green moussaka to American apple pie and Irish soda bread. Come in and see what's cooking. We also have many, many new horse stories for those horse story lovers--"Black Gold" and "The Black Stallion's Ghost" just to mention a few. I'll be looking for you so come in and take some of these new books home for some Spring reading fun. Mrs. D.W.
