By Herbert L. Matthews Matthews is an outstanding correspondent known abroad as well as in the United States. This book is a story of the author's extraordinary career and also about the world situation then (1971). H.L. Matthews was a reporter for the New York Times from 1922 to 1937; he also served as correspondent bureau chief, editorial writer and became a member of the editorial board. He covered major events from Mussolini's invasion in Ethiopia, to the Spanish Civil War to Castro's Cuban revolution and was assigned posts in Paris, Rome, London, India and other important world centers. Mr. Matthews disclosed his encounter with Fidel Castro and his involvement with the Cuban press. When Matthews disputed the fact that Castro was not a Communist in the beginning, he helped shape American policy toward Cuba by his research of actual factual data in the news. Also, there is Matthews' coverage of the Spanish Civil War which was for him a turning point to understanding the battle between powers of freedom and totalitarianism. There are thrilling descriptions of perils covering the Spanish war and Matthews' difficulty of getting truth into print. The reader learns all about the newspaper world--The New York Times, its flaws, virtues, people and politics. Matthews tells of Latin American countries that are of special interest to him and everyone. For anyone interested in world affairs or how the news is made and reported, this book will be of interest to the reader. Author Herbert L. Matthews was born in New York City in the year 1900, and received many distinguished awards including The Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, The George Polk Memorial award, The New York Newspaper's Guild Page One award. CALABRESE 312-546-8225 THE GRIEVE CORPORATION ROUND LAKE, ILL. 60073 Visual Problems One out of three adults in the U.S. 40 years of age or older has visual problems, estimates the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. More than 70 million Americans in this age group have some type of eyeg difficulty, and while most of I these cases are not serious and can be corrected by proper eyeglasses, many of them coyld -- lead to serious eye ailments or even blindness, the Society warns. The one best "ounce of. prevention" is a regular eye > examination at least once • every two years, according to medical experts on the Society's board. , The reason for this, they say, > is that one of the most common , causes of blindness among older people is glaucoma, an eye disease which has no apparent symptoms until it is far advanced. Often called the 1 "thief of sight", glaucoma is' responsible for more than 13 • per cent of all blindness in the nations, the Society has learned. It can be detected, however, by a simple, painless | test that measures the pressure"' in the eye, and, if found in time, the disease can be kept under control. Glaucoma is one of the four leading causes of blindness in America. The other three are senile retinal degeneration, diabetic retinopathy (together these two account for almost one quarter of all blindness), and senile cataracts which cause loss of vision in another 8.5 percent. www^wwwwwi V.A.
