DRUG ARRESTS "Editor: "In regard to last Tuesday's drug arrests and indictments, I would like to make a few points which we should consider. It appears at first glance that Sheriff Tyrrell is doing the best job McHenry county has ever seen as far as drug traffic is concerned. But is he really helping the youth? "First, why didn't he set up a sort of drug abuse center where anyone who felt they had a problem could go for guidance without the paranoia of being busted, watched or completely turned off by someone saying, 'You shouldn't do that, it's bad for you'. "Secondly, we should remember that practically everyone of those people arrested were not major drug traffickers but nickel and dime 'pushers' just passing the stuff along to a friend. It's sad to think of who stopped smoking pot in the ten months that IK}' i V2J * M tWPIKESS IS A TROJAN VICTMV elapsed, and now must suffer the fate that awaits them. "Thirdly, most of these people are just out of high school, preparing for future careers, and now they have just been kicked, and must deal with a scar that will never heal. "Older folks can't seem to figure out why the young have no respect for the law, but can you really blame someone for having a sour attitude for America when for twenty years all they've known is war, violence and money hungry people who don't care whose toes get stepped on just to make it to the top? "Were these people hurting anyone but themselves for what they did? Surely there are enough concerned citizens to do something. It would be a crime in itself to put the youth of America in jail for such a medieval crime. People don't seem to understand that pot is here, to stay, just like alcohol, and putting everyone in jail is just a seed to revolution. "I hope you will give some thought to what has been said. "Donald J. Pedersen "7011 Beach Drive "Wonder Lake" "Editor: "McHenry County college spring semester classes in adult education will be ending at the McHenry West campus high school within the next two weeks. An adult education course in "Lifesaving" was offered for the first time. "John Bevan, assistant principal of Woodstock high school and Water Safety instructor for the Red Cross, took charge of a small group. This course lasted ten weeks and within this short time Mr. Bevan worked with great intensity, vigor and unending enthusiasm. He never seemed to tire of demonstrating with the students care and caution one must observe in order to become a certified lifesaver. "Mr. Bevan molded each student personally with calm progress, there were lectures, shallow and deep water workouts, warm-up sessions and physical demonstrations in the pool. Each student worked hard to achieve the Red Cross standards of Lifesaving. "On May 1, both written and physical examinations were held at the West campus high school, according to the standards set forth by the Red Cross: It is the opinion of this writer that McHenry County college should offer this course again in the near future. It features two gnomes rejoicing over a Trojan victory. It is white, with the lettering, design and trim in red. Laura's design, which depicts originality and school spirit, was made after the Student Council at Junior high school decided they wanted to sell tee shirts. The idea was taken to Mrs. Toalson's art class where several students drew designs and submitted them for a vote. NO SCHOOL MAY 31 There will be no school for Johnsburg District 12 pupils May 31, and therefore a four- day Memorial day weekend will result beginning May 30, and ending June 2. Classes will resume June 3. This is a change from the school calendar sent home to parents last fall when Memorial day was listed as May 27. The state legislature changed the celebration to May 31 last fall, and the Johnsburg school calendar has been accordingly adjusted. For Your Information Dear friends, What to tell the children when a death occurs in the family? The answer - tell them "the truth". A simple explanation of the fact that death occurs eventually to all living things is the most wholesome for the child. It is far better than pretending that grandma has merely "gone away for awhile".
