We have a Constitution, a system of law and government that sings a workaday song -- defending our political faith, our freedom to move, to develop, to live in harmony and dignity." Ceremonies in the McHenry county courthouse marked Law day and were followed with a dinner last weekend at Crystal Lake. McHenry County Bar association members led the observance, built around the theme, "Young America, Lead the Way ." Dr. Peter Griesbach, McHenry, was presented the Liberty Bell award. Judge James Cooney said that it is a concern to him regarding how much the public understands about the complexities of the criminal justice system. "It is imperfect because it is devised by man - and administered by man - and man himself is imperfect," he said. "Man in the legislature and in the reviewing courts provides the structure and body of laws. Persons as law e n f o r c e m e n t o f f i c e r s investigate crimes and gather evidence. Persons as prosecutors and defense counsel prepare the evidence to be presented, where the jury or judge weigh the evidence and determine the guilt or innocence of the accused." Judge Cooney said the Illinois State Legislature in 1972 provided the judiciary system ^\$»th a new code of corrections. It incorporates a philosophy and purpose of rehabilitation rather than custodial corrections. "In the guidelines to be followed by judges in sentencing, the word 'punishment' is not mentioned. This is just one element that enters into the matter of sentencing. Should we be inclined to resist the new philosophy, it is worth the try because the former way could not be characterized as successful." (DON PEASLEY PHOTOGRAPHY) M Faculty Association Names Officers The Faculty association of McHenry County college has elected its officers for the 1974- 75 academic year. The action came at the April 30 meeting of the association. The officers are Margaret M. "Peg" Griffith, president;- Joseph Rybacek, vice- president; John Konitzer, treasurer and Judy Decker, secretary. Also named were chairpersons of standing committees. They are Legislation and Civic, Kenneth "Gus" Williams; Professional and Public Relations, Diana Vickery; Membership and Finance, Edwin Solon; Program and Social, Carol Beers; and Welfare and Ethics, Ralph Fidler. According to outgoing president, John Adelmann, the new officers will begin serving at the May meeting of the association. The membership also voted to commend Adelmann for the job he has done during the past year as president. At the April 30 meeting, the association also adopted a new constitution which will take "In our Law day messages, we are saying we must encourage our youth to participate in the mainstream of American life and work through this system," Attorney Hecht said. He cited contradictory examples of what young people are told, contrasted with what they observe. The association has been operative at the college for six years. "Green Banks" Donation Made To Defenders In commemoration of Arbor day this year, Junior Defenders members unanimously agree to donate $100 to the adult Defenders "Green Banks" program. The program is to start this spring and to continue until next fall. The Junior Defenders are also planning to take an active part in the "Green Banks" program. Members also want to demonstrate erosion control methods along county waterways. They plan to clean a road Saturday, June 8. Those interested in helping should contact Scott Mulligan, 459- 5120. A nature walk is planned May 11 to meet at Veterans Acres, and on to Babcock's woods in Woodstock, where the walk will take place. Members should bring along their wildflower and bird book for reference. Terrariums created by Junior Defenders will be on sale on Green Street in McHenry. Plants are from woodlands of the community.
