Articulation Conference On English "Literatures of Learning: Helping the High School Graduate Adjust to College English Composition" was the title of the first articulation conference in English between McHenry County college and the county high schools. The event, hosted by the college, was held recently in Crystal Lake, with sixteen instructors from seven high schools in attendance: Marge Lopeman, Sue Parks and Betty Polyock from Alden-Hebron; Marjorie Young, James Olesen and Jeanne Baker from Cary- Grove; Kathy Findlay and Dorothy O'Connor of Crystal Lake high school; Doris Tozer, Agnes Skadberg and Marcia Monica from Harvard high school; Joe Manning and Chris Holaves from Huntley high school; Tom Blum of McHenry West high school; Jim Reinhard and Bill Dean of Woodstock high school. Dean Robert Bartlett of the college opened with a welcoming address. MCC instructors presented their approaches to teaching English composition. They were Kathryn Bohlen, "A Structured Approach"; Charles Ham, "An Individualized Approach"; Steven Sculley, "A Small- Group Approach"; and Walter Gerth, "The Individualized Study Laboratory." After lunch, a discussion was held in which high school instructors explained their programs, and ideas of mutual interest were exchanged. Hold Training For Teachers Of Retarded In Area The McHenry County Office of Catholic Education will conduct a weekend of training for religion teachers of the retarded Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, at St. Thomas the Apostle school, Crystal Lake. The classes, which run from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on both days, will be held in the library of the Lake street school, 470 Lake street. The weekend session marks the first phase of a program of special religious education for retarded students living in the fourteen Catholic parishes of McHenry county. According to Father Karl Ganss, county director of religious education, the program will begin next fall and have as its objective to create a community of faith in which the handicapped student will be able to understand his- her own religious experiences and relate to other believers.. The faculty of weekend seminar will consist of representatives of the Special Religious Education division of the Catholic archdiocese of Chicago. For further information contact Mrs. Robert J. TOP RANKED STUDENT Steven McArdle, Wonder Lake, will be recognized in the 1974 Honors and Awards program of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, which will be given out at the May 11 commencement. McArdle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter McArdle, 7205 Loras La., was named one of the scholastically top ranking freshmen at UW- Whitewater.
