Hanner) It is known to us all that this is an unusual spring. It has been cold and rainy. The ground is not warm or dry enough to plant crops or flowers. The wind has blown with unmitigated force through 6ur communities and towns in widely separated parts of the country. What can the matter be? The weather has been lousy! Why? The answer to this is so simple that it escapes everyone's attention. Even our wisest men, our best meteoro log i s t s a re in a quandary, Men like Harry Volkman and others try hard to make the weather behave. No luck - no success! Why? Gentle and wise reader, you may find this hard to believe. The trouble with the weather is the political situation. The weather is so upset by the impeachment proceedings, the trials of Otto Kerner, Mitchell, Camms, the lackadaisical Congress, the record of the Chicago Cubs and the troubles of Arntrak that it doesn't know what to do. I venture that even Dick Tracy is at his wits end to make sense of this. The nation is in such a mess ' that the weather in a sort of psychiatric sympathy has gotten all fouled up. If we could just try the President, and the Cub pitching would improve, the weather would pick right up. It is as plain as the nose on your face. Inflation and bad weather would both go away and get lost and we all would live happily ever after. Feeling upset by all this I took my wife out to lunch. We went over to Long Grove to an eatery one of my Kenilworth parishioners took me to once. There was a goodly long table with all sorts of sustenance upon it. We partook of all that was low in calories and chose some other things because we hoped they tasted as good as they looked. Most of them did. I began fo feel better. I discovered, by dint of much questioning and search, that this eatery had a place where one might wash one's hands. My hunt was in progress when I passed the kitchen door. There was a sign upon it - it was a homemade sign. It stated its message simply, H,CAUTION-LOW FLYING WAITRESSES" I felt better. After lunch we decided that inasmuch as it was pouring rain this was an ideal time to visit a grower who once upon a Christmas Eve had, when other sources failed, provided tne with twelve dozen red carnations fin* the Christmas altar on thirty minutes notice. My floral friend has a sense of humor. He does not always realize it. We entered his furnace room -'which is also his shop and there were explicit directions as to how to find him. The directions were on a styrofoam surface. They were inscribed with an ink marker: "IF WE ARE NOT IN THE. SHOP COME INTO THE GREENHOUSE AND YU- HOO" So we went into the greenhouse and yu-hooed. We bought geraniums for the front porch, a Martha Washington geranium, a white Henri clematis and three tomato plants. The owner's wife gave us a bunch of pretty good carnations that had not sold on Mother's day. As we left there was one more sign over the seed rack: "Buy your seeds early, Looks like everyone is going To plant a vegetable garden this year. But remember where you plant them." We came home. It was still raining. I felt better. I had been out in America where the people are. I took a nice rainy day nap.
