MAY 22.1*74 - West Shore Beach Connie Schmidt x 385-7841 Weather Problems Cause Changes In Subdivision During last week's rainy period there have been severed changes caused by the weather. On Mother's day the high winds collapsed a large garage undo* construction by Sven Enarson. The structure was moved off balance by a sudden gust and now there remains only the shingled roof upon the concrete base. In addition, the water level at the beach front has submerged moored boats and covered most of the sandy area. A huge gully has eroded in the center of the beach and much sand has been taken into the water. Residents have been experiencing flooded lawns and houses. The unusually rapid saturation of rain has been the major cause of the trouble. Low lying areas particularly are sponge-like and surface water is seeking somewhere to go. Let's all hope brighter and sunnier days will dry up our troubles! DID YOU RECYCLE? It was the third Saturday of May and the McHenry County d e f e n d e r s c o l l e c t e d newspapers, magazines, and cardboard. The County college collected cleaned bottles and cans from 9 til noon. Save this month for June's drive and help our environment. VA THE nnioitv STATE BAN] 3510 W. (/////// CONSERVATION BRIEF Three officers and four members attended last Thursday evening's meeting. Forthcoming to area subdivisions will be a letter of the annual report. The clean-up of the feeder streams was cancelled on May 4 due to lack of participants. Thank you notes will be sent to Col. Goeppner, Col. Brown, and Lieut. Bricefor their help in the lake survey. The next meeting is June 20 in Lakeland Park. On the agenda is the destruction of the snails and a further discussion of swimmer's itch. A decision to treat the water twice will also be brought up as the area of greatest infestation was between West Shore Beach and Spojnia. A possible fishing derby for the children may be planned. EPITAPH FOR A SUBDIVISION - The following is an article anonymously mailed to me by one of our residents wishing to express some thoughts about this subdivision. Here lies a rare breed of people: Perished from lack of interest and profound boredom. It is becoming more apparent with the passing of each month that the people who live in the subdivision are not concerned about its future. I am not saying that ALL the people fit into this category, however, the majority do. I base this observation oh fact not fiction. There is a monthly Association meeting. Where are you? The month of May produced only six members. This small number cannot resolve all the problems that exist in the subdivision. But aside from this the real problem seems to be lack of interest. Let's examine this just a bit further. What was April's attendance? Ten? March? Nine? Are you getting the message. I'm assuming you are not interested in road repair, beach clean-up, weed and pet control, garbage, snow plowing, adult social activities, children's activities and the column in the Plaindealer. Are you still not getting the message. Or perhaps your face is showing a bit of pink. Is it shame? Because it couldn't be anger. Besides who cares. And if you do care, what is the next step. Well people this is not a difficult question to answer. Attendance is one way to solve problems. Arbitration is another. Remember you need not be a paying member or a year round resident to have your viewpoint heard. The association's primary % concern is all residents not just a few. Don't phone your neighbor, attend the meeting. Your complaints are just as important as your compliments. Don't let a beautiful place such as this subdivision become just another forgotten slum ghetto. Unless the epitaph is true! PERSONALS A big congratulation to Pat and Bill Mohlman, Jr., who celebrated their first wedding anniversary on May 19. Best wishes for a happy future and many more loving years. Belated birthday wishes to Ken Wahl who I missed earlier this month on May 6. Martha Dignan traveled to Holland, Mich., for the tulip festival with many other friends. Their bus transportation was provided by a local travel club. Have a nice week!
