Took a ride up to Lake Geneva and found that town buzzing with people and cars. Saw young men with bare tops and saw women with fur capes. Some like it hot -- some like it cold. Looks like we are going to have a skimpy sports page this issue. Contributors must have forgotten the holiday deadlines. It's a mixed up week. Just heard a TV report that Federal offices will close on Monday. State and municipal offices will close on Thursday in Illinois. FOR YOU OLD TIME SPORTS FANS -- Walter Johnson, in his 22 years in the majors, fanned 3,497 batters and hurled 113 shutouts. In August of 1903, "Iron Man" Joe McGinnity hurled three complete double-headers for the New York Giants and won all six games. In 1911, Grover Cleveland Alexander, a rookie, won 28 games with the Philadelphia Phillies. That's when men were men. (And the baseball wasn't souped up). Glad to see our Sox get out of Kansas City. Maybe the climate doesn't agree with them. We aren't even sure they won that big free-for-all fight. Anyhow, it doesn't go into the records. As this is written, the Sox are on their way to New York. We can takp those Yankees! Dick Wimmer must be representing the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce. He tells one and all about the wonderful climate. Seems Dick doesn't take a fancy to snow shovels. Old golfers never fade. They just splash away. Gene Schaefer tells \ was , in a foursome last k at McHenry Country CI with Art Jackson, Ed Buss and Ted Spengel - splashing through the rain. It was just a heavy dew for Art as he was out in 31 and home with 35. Buss and Spengel each had 77. When we asked Gene about his score, he was quick to reply, "Never mind. I want to talk about Art's 66." Finally got it out of Gene that he posted a score of 86. That's not bad. A lot of guys would be happy with that score splashing through the rain. As they say at the track, Art' is a good mudder. It may be old, but we like this one-- A man gets on a train, a sleeper in New York City. He goes up to the porter and he says, "Look I.want to getoff in Richmond, Va., but once I'm asleep it's very difficult for me to wake up. Sometimes I'm nasty and I don't know what I'm saying. Here's 10 dollars. Please, no matter what I say, wake me up and get me off the train in Richmond, Va." The man wakes up in Raleigh, N.C., and he's furious. He finds the porter, screams and yells, and takes a swing at him. Then he gets off the train. The conductor sees what's going on, goes up to the porter, and says. "What happened? I've never seen anyone get that mad?" The porter answers, "That's nothing. You should see the guy I put off in Richmond, Va." -Farmers' Almanac Swimming Lessons Remember sign up for summer swimming lessons and competitive swimming at West Campus pool. Husty Nail, a much improved ball club this year, took on Jerry's Phillip's 66 in game one. Rusty Nail held on >~for the win 21 to 9 A 22 hit barrage including six homeruns proved too much for the Phillip's 66 team. For Husty Nail Jim LaFontane went 4 for 5 including a homerun; Jim Gray went 4 for 6 with a homerun and a double; Len Ackermann added two doubles and a homerun while Bill Comstock went 3 fon-6 including a homerun and a double. Gary Schmitt and Gary Miller added homeruns while Gary Busse had two doubles For Jerry's Phillip's 66 Jeff Wendt's 3 run homer in the fifth Libertyville Beats Warriors Twice To Win Conference Title Junior Olympics Held Last Saturday Bv Dick Rabbitt Coach Ernie Ritta's Libertyville Wildcats wrapped up a most successful athletic season for the Cats as they defeated the Warriors twice Saturday to clinch the North Suburban title. In the opener Dave rWickencamp lost a heartbreaker 1 to 0.. An error and a triple in the 7th inning proved the Warrior downfall. In the nightcap it was all Libertyville. They scored early and often to win in 5 innings 12 to 1. The double win enabled the Wildcats to win the title outright. This baseball title along with football, wrestling and track gives the Libertyville High School the North Suburban Conference All Sports award. Soph Nine Splits With Libertyville The McHenry sophomore baseball team split a pair of games at -Libertyville last Saturday. Tommy Ludwig lost the opener 3 to 2 in what could be considered one of the best games .of the season. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th and no outs, Ludwig got the first two men out. Erickson, Libertyville's leftfielder, then hit a blooper over third that provided the win for the young Cats. In the second game Tony Christy won his 5th game of the season as the Warriors won 5 to 2. Tony is 5 and 0 on the season, and should be a fine addition to Coach Ken Swanson's varsity next season. FROSH LOSE TWO The snake bitten freshmen lost a pair of games to the Libertyville freshmen by the scores of 6 to 1 and 4 to 0. In the first game Libertyville managed 1 earned run, but again errors ptoved costly to the freshmen. In the second game lack of hitting in the clutch again proved the downfall of the frosh. Pictured above are Renate Goettel and Tore Sivertsen who were the trophy winners at the Hilltop Junior Olympics Day held on Saturdav. Golfers Defeat Woodstock In '74 Season Final By Dick Rabbitt Coach Chuck Cuda's McHenry High golfers closed out a very successful season last Thursday by defeating Woodstock 178 to 192 at the McHenry Country Club. Tom Long paced the varsity with a 43. He was followed by Bob Buss with a 44. Kenne Ludwig had a 45 and Jim Burke and Bob Buenzli each carded 46's. McDougal Paces J .V. WIN Mike McDougal shooting a 42 defeated his opponent Bob Neuman of Woodstock by 40 strokes to pace the J.V.'s to a win last Thursday at McHenry. Lowell Kively carded a 41, A1 Hill had a 43. Ed Zumski shot a 46 and Kevin Rourke had a 48. The final score was McHenry 172 Woodstock 238. It is interesting to note that J.V.'s actually outshot the varsity in this match. From the looks of Things Coach Cuda will have a good supply of golfers this fall, when the I.H.S.A. will begin fall golf for the high schools in Illinois. Morton won the game 13 to 2. Larry Schwartz hit a homerun in the seventh inning while Chuck Ebann doubled twice and singled in going 3 for 4. In the first inning Warren Heir doubled in Bob Kolby for Brake Parts first run. Brake Parts scored their second run on a single by Jack Dalton and a triple by Mike Belancourt in the second. Swanson Chalet won a closely fought 11 inning contest with the Riverside Bake Shop. Holding a 2-0 lead in to the seventh the Chalet found themselves tied at 2 as the Bake Shop pushed across two runs. Both teams scored one run apiece in the ninth and the score remained deadlocked at 3 to 3. In the bottom half of the tenth inning the Bake Shop loaded the bases with no outs however a triple play prevented the winning run from scoring. A line shot to short center fielder, Bob Frejjnd, required two steps to second for the force out and a throw to third base to end the inning.
