First on the program is a classicaOtece, Act III of the ballet "La Favorita", with soloists Jennifer Lewan, McHenry, Deborah Rosulek, Carolyn Cowie and Joan Goodwin, all from Crystal Lake. The corps de ballet is composed of 10 young girls. "Americana", a character ballet, will be performed by twenty-five dancers depicting some of the flavor of days gone by. Numerous solos and group performances display the sometimes raucous, sometimes touching, and always delightful qualities reminiscent of a village festival at the turn of the century. Ann Thennes, Paul Zimny, Paul Yuskas, Doug Groh and Judy Svalander lead the spirited dances with vitality. "Life Is a Song," appropriately names the third act - an exciting jazz sequence filled with joyous abandon. JUNE 1 MASTERPIECE GALLERY 235 BENTON WOODSTOCK 9-5:30 Letter from Washington by Senator Charles H. Percy a In early May I introduced comprehensive legislative package aimed at providing income security for our 20 million citizens age 65 and over. Now I have introduced another series of bills de signed to upgrade nursing homes and provide additional social services for the elderly. Although much has been done in the last few years to improve the quality of nursing home care, we are still confronted with serious problems. For example, the Department of Health, Educa tion and Welfare reports that 59 percent of all certified skilled nursing „• facilities- some 4,300 out of a total of 7,300--are not in full compli ance with the Life Safety Code prepared by the Nation al Fire Protection Associa tion. , The federal government has a responsibility to deal with these problems because Medi care and Medicaid provide Deaths JUANITA G. STRAUEL Mrs. Juanita G. Strauel, 37, 3808 N. Spring Grove road, Johnsburg, died at her home Wednesday, May 29. She was born Nov. 15, 1936, in Illinois. Among her survivors are her husband, Edward, and several children. A r r a n g e m e n t s w e r e incomplete at press time at the George R. Justen and Son funeral home. STANELY STRUMIDLOWSKI Stanley Strumidlowski, 5216 Thelen, Pistakee Highlands, died Monday, May 27, at McHenry hospital. No other details were available at press time. EDWARD L. ANDERSON Edward L. Anderson of 7409 Lynn, Wonder Lake, died in McHenry hsopital, May 24. McHenry Country Club Nineteen teams participated in the Tennessee Dog Fight Tournament held at the club on Sunday, May 26, and when all teams had finished, the team of Tim Martin, Bob Hoelscher, Bob Schmaling and Dick Turner were the winners with a 9 under par 62. In second place one stroke back at 63 was the team of Art Jackson, B. Jemiola, Jack Smithson and Gary Fields. Third place went to the team of F. Cuda, Dick Jemiola, Ken Holmes and Jack Phelan with a score of 64. The next tournament on the club schedule will be the Directors tournament which substantial financial support for nursing homes. Last year about $4.5 billion was spent on nUrSlftg home care in America. Nearly one-half of this bill was paid by Medicare and Medicaid. About 80 per cent of all nursing home resi dents receive Medicaid or some other form of public as sistance. In 1973 some 70,000 nursing home residents re- ? ceived $188 million in Medi care assistance. The number of nursing homes have doubled since 1966, one year after Medi care and Medicaid became law. And the need for facili ties will grow. By the year 2000, when we expect to have 33 million citizens age 65 and over, the number of nursing home residents could easily double over the one million who now live in these facili ties. Basic to any program for nursing homes are measures to upgrade the quality of the homes themselves and the services provided for resi dents. We should provide low- interest, government-insured loans to nursing homes which can'be upgraded without risk to the health and safety of residents. Other facilities should be closed. It should be mandatory that all non-professional em ployees of long-term care institutions receive pre-service and in-service training. Full federal reimbursement should be provided for the training will begin on Sunday, June 2. About 60 members have signed up for this event and all indications are that it will be another hotly contested tournament. The husband-wife outing will be held on Sunday, June 16, (not June 9 as was erroneously reported last week). HARVARD 21-23 N. AYER ST. HARVARD, ILL. A man is rich according to what he can do without, not according to what he has in the bank. 9 and compensation of state nursing home inspectors. Also, HEW should publish and dis tribute widely a summary of nursing home certification and inspection reports. A nursing home ombuds man should be appointed in every state to make nursing homes more accountable to the communities they serve. To make nursing homes more accessible to communities we should expand volunteer visit ing programs, especially by young people. improving nurstng bomes is only part of the challenge. Social services must be pro vided to avoid early and un necessary institutionalization of elderly persons. Home health services, home-deliv ered meals and adequate transportation can make it possible for elderly persons to romain independent. When elderly persons are no longer able to maintain themselves! yet are not in need of intensive nursing care, means and incentives should be provided for such persons to be maintained within the family unit. Present law provides in centives for families to place aged relatives in nursing homes. Perhaps through the tax system or direct payment through Medicaid, we can provide an incentive to keep the elderly person in the family.-- These proposals deserve the attention and considera tion of every Illinoisan. About 10 per cent of our state's residents are 65 and over. We must assure them that they will have adequate care in quality facilities as well as a sufficient income. > 1974 SUBARU OUR NEW ADDITION ri AMC WITH JEEP 1974 GREMLIN |McHenryAmc/Jeep Inc.
