Q -- My father was discharged last year from the Army and died last month of a service-connected cause. I'm planning to enter college this fall. Can the Veterans Administration help? A - Yes. VA will provide training benefits for you under its Dependents' Education Assistance program. From Mrs. F. R. Gale, Calgary, Alberta: I remember, at the age of eighteen, finding myself en- route to the Canadian Northwest, where I was to become a teacher i£ a small village. A kindly townsman drove me to the farmhouse where I was to spend a night. I was awed by the wide expanse of prairie land and I marvelled at the great herds of cattle, more than I had ever seen at one time. The farmer, his wife and son lived in one large room. I won dered where I might sleep. At bedtime, a curtain was drawn, dividing the room. I was given a cot with a straw matress. It had been quickly made up and I found myself sliding down one side, then the other. However, I finally managed to sleep, but sud denly I was awakened by the wierdest noises I had ever heard. There were yelps, moans, screams and howls. Being of Irish extrac tion, I could think only of Ban shees! There was no more sleep for me that night. In the morning, I fearfully ask ed the farmer's wife about the nightmarish sounds, and was told they were the howls of coyotes, the small prairie wolves. They have become an accustomed sight, but I still remember my first night in the West! COIL WINDERS COIL FINISHERS Steady Employment We have had no lay offs in 4 years. 90% of jobs on incentive. Rosen Instructor- Ornamental Horticulture McHenry County College Memorial day has finally come and gone. Even ABC's flamboyant weatherman John Coleman says that all chances of a hard freeze are gone until next fall. Gardeners of McHenry county, the glorious day has arrived at last. It gives me great pleasure to announce that the time has come to set out your annuals. From now until autumn thousands of summer gardens and landscapes will be filled with a myriad of bright, gay color. In my estimation, the problem is not whether to plant, but what to plant? Because the allotted space in your garden is probably quite limited, a cheerfully planned, anxiously awaited trip to your local garden center or nursery can become a frustrating experience. Satisfactory results in growing annuals depends to a large extent on thorough soil preparation. Good drainage, and fairly high fertility levels are both a must if maximum flower production is to be achieved. Most clay soils are notoriously poorly drained. In order to facilitate the movement of water into and out ample water either now, or during the hot summer months ahead. Experience has taught me the hard way that one must usually be prepared to irrigate if disaster is to be averted. The famed journalist Damon Runyon once told his son, "Beware the man who walks up to you with a sealed deck of cards, and is willing to bet that the jack of diamonds will jump out and spit cider in your ear. It will happen every time." Well fellow gardeners, Ma Nature is just about as fickle. Rescue below the dam. Award Winning Photos Plaindealer Photographer Wayne Gaylord attended the Illinois Press Photographers annual seminar at Champaign, Illinois last week and was twice honored. A picture story and a spot news photo taken by him was selected for the I.P.P.A. Traveling Exhibit. The picture story was a feature of Dave Dawson, the blind school teacher at West campus. Gaylord's spot news photp, which previously captured a thirdplace finish in Region 5 (Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota) showed the midnight boat accident at the McHenry dam. One highlight of the convention were talks by speakers from the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Star, Louisville, Ky., Courier-Journal, University of Indiana and Dayton, Ohio Journal Herald. The event ended with an awards banquet. Dave Dawson is blind, but his teaching career is bright.
