»AGE 6 - PLAIN DEALER-WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5. 1974 EARL WALSH So I Hear Jim Curran was quick to call about our observation on athletes' good looking wives. Their pictures are on the sport pages, aren't they? Guess Jim thought we wore blinders. SPORTS EDITORJ in evidence, you will find their kind. Replays on TV are making some umpiring decisions look mighty bad -- not on balls and strikes, but at the bases. It surprised us to see so many along the parade route. You would think it was Marine- Festival Day. Walt Freund, a "Hall of Fame Sports Fan" in our book, is celebrating his 84th birthday this week. And, he still knows the score. "Where did you get that?", we asked a little boy with a sucker. "From the doctor when he gave me a shot," was the reply. Thought we would have some fun so asked where he got the shot. "In the doctor's office" was the answer we didn't expect. It can't be any secret that American League pitchers are making Ron Santo and Dick Allen look bad on low, outside curves. LOOK ALIKES-- Rich Gossage and Terry Forster, White Sox pitchers. A nice young Mamma, now that she has a son growing up, tells us that mention of long hair is a No-No. OK. We won't say a word. Not that it changes a good young man, but darned if we can recognize ihem with long hair, a beard or mustache. Charles Lindwall of McHenry Shores, who deals in stone markers, tells us we reported visiting a marble quarry when .visiting Ed and Agnes Thennes in Montello, Wis. last year. He says it is granite. Guess we pulled another rock. Summer must be here ahead of the official date. How else could they have so many re runs on television. If our White Sox don't start putting it all together soon, we are going to threaten to cancel our order for World Series tickets. How do you get rid of toadstools? There is a beautiful crop in our front yard. It is getting close. The annual Joe Frett Night is coming Wednesday, June 19th. Better get your tickets. There will be a crowd. I GOLF AWARD. Kenne Ludwig (L) a junior at West Campus receives the trophy for low total in all 1 matches. Coach Chuck Cuda presented the award. Kenne captured third in the district tourney with ! a 76. In the conference, Kenne placed seventh with a 37 in the rain shortened tourney. (STAFF PHOTO--WAYNE GAYLORD) Frantz And George Share [Player Of Week Honors After writing the question and sure somebody would tell us to dig them out, we saw the answer in Bee-Line. Spread a double dose of fertilizer over the area. That's what the man said. It was Friday night that Judy Svalander's mother reminded us of the coming "Judy Svalander In Concert" program set for Sunday night in the Crystal Lake High School auditorium. ^ ,v"--• g -ahead L ike to y ednesd \ by Bruce Ericson After two weeks of rain-outs, Men's 16" Softball League ted little time in making up games. Steve George of the V.F.W. went 10 for 16 with 5 R.B.I.'s.- From the raves we read about the Cubs' rookie, Alexander, it appears that Carmen Fanzone (third basemen and night club entertainer) had better keep up with his music. With all the mixup on when to observe Memorial Day, it was a pleasant surprise to see the large crowd in the park Thursday morning for the program. Judy, a talented little doll, has taught many young people to dance and they pleased a large audience. Most McHenry area people. Prr?eeds will go to the McHenry Area Rescue Squad. Some of those dancers were mere tots, but they had learned how to perform. The ceremony was impressive as both young and older showed respect. Didn't have to look long to find the Bob Thompsons and Maude Granger. Mrs. Frank Meyer completed the foursome. Where patriotism is Couldn't help thinking how lucky our community is to have a person of Judy's ability instructing our young people. You could tell those kids love her. And she loves them. It was a nice evening -- different from the usual events we attend. In fact it was so good that we didn't mind missing Lawrence Welk. County College Offers Sailing, Canoeing And Scuba Diving Courses The Office of Community Services of McHenry County College is offering several summer session classes which will be held at the Crystal Lake Park District at 300 Lake Shore Drive. "We have three courses this summer: scuba diving, sailing and' canoeing, which are offered in cooperation with the Park District," said Pete Stuckey, director of community services at MCC. "Unfortunately, the sailing class is already filled, but students may still register for scuba diving and canoeing." The scuba diving class starts on June 24, 1974 and will meet from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings. The purpose of the class is to teach safety and skills in skin diving and the use of self - fentained underwater breathing apparatus. The physics and physiology of diving, and the standards and organization of diving clubs will be taught. Upon completion, the student will qualify for NAIU and PADI certification. The class is taught by members of the Illinois Institute of Diving, Inc. The canoeing course is designed to teach a novice the proper handling of canoes, different styles of canoeing fnd canoe rescues. Participants must be intermediate swimmers. The class starts on June 13, 1974 and will meet from 7-8:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings. Pre-registration for these and other summer session classes will be held at McHenry County College from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on June 5 and 6. There will also be a special registration at McHenry Community High School, West Campus from 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Students may also register during the first class session. Further information about summer session classes may be obtained by referring to the summer schedule or by calling the Office of Community Services at 459-6800, Ext. 24. Beach will be used as "teaching" beaches. On the west side, Highland Shores Beach, Sunrise Ridge Beach, and Wonder Woods Beach No. 1 will be used. We express, publicly, our gratitude to the residents of these 5 subdivisions for their fine and generous cooperation because every youngster can take advantage of the swim program at these various locations. The two sponsoring clubs consider this to be a most important program for all children living in and around a lake area like Wonder Lake. They encourage all parents to register their children for the Wonder Lake Swim Program 1974 for beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate, swimmer, and lifesaving classes. DIVOT DOLLS By Dee Overton Wow! For Qualifying in Class Match Plav at McHenry Country Club, the gals dug in their spikes and really played some good golf. Two Class C players from Des Plaines sunk approaches. By the way they ride in the same car -- do you suppose one might have had to walk home if? Gene Napier on No. 2 for a 6 and Betty Wayman on No. 15 for 7. Ethel Conway has the distinction of the first "Birdie" in Class B. Ethel sank a long putt for a deuce on the par 3 No. 18. Four more Class A players had birdies for a total of 8 'Birds on the Birdie Tree'. Joan Buss also had a deuce on No. 18, (I guess it runs in the family). Letty Busscher and Laverne Harpling each had 3's on No. 14. (Hey guys -- wanna have a contest out on 14 some day?) Our Club Champion, Marilyn Bishoff, showed a little style by picking the tricky No. 6th hole for her bird. Nice 4 Marilyn. But along comes a quiet 'Swede' who sang "Bye, Bye, Birdies". On the 18th hole, she took her trusty 5 w8od and proceeded to hole out for a 'Hole In One'! I'd call that a 'Touch of Class'. Our hearts are happy and our congratulations to you -- Anna Johnson. Yours will be the gold bird perched on very top of the Tree'.
