That's the observation of Betty- ann Raschko, an authority oh ar chitectural design for the elderly, who has compared the activities of elderly persons living in studio apartments with those living in one-bedroom units. Mrs. Raschko finds that senior citizens living in studio apart ments will forego a worthwhile project or a new hobby because it "messes up things." On the other hand, those elderly persons who live in separate bedroom units have a place to store their projects and therefore look for ward to pursuing new interests. "Man adapts too readily to con ditions that might injure his health," she explains. "The eld erly will let nothing jeopardize a quality of order in their units. Call it pride of maintenance, per sonal self-respect, or what, order is so important to the elderly that they will limit or forego activities that enrich their lives by new pursuits." For that reason, this designer1 urges planners of facilities for the elderly to include private PAGE 15 - PLAINDEALER-FR^ , JUNE 14, 1W4 special emphasis on the needs of the elderly and handicapped in the United States, Scandinavia and Germany. space or area that a person can manage according to his wishes.
