Ways and Means Chairman Ceil Violett gave her report on the semi-annual chicken dinner held last month. Dot tie Messer and Pauline Pickett, co- chairmen of the carnival, appealed for help and announced that a bake sale will be in conjunction with the carnival. They asked the members to please be generous with their donations of baked goods. The meeting ended with Sally Roth singing "I'm Proud To Be An American". Mary Kantorski, Gold Star chairman, was in charge of the arrangements for the dinner. American Legion Auxiliary News UNIT 491 By Pearl Cooper Fifty-seven members and guests met at the McHenry American Legion post home recently to pay tribute to the Gold Star members of the McHenry unit. The Gold Star members present at the annual pot-luck dinner were Evelyn Justen, Dorothy Miller, Angela Freund, Greta Gieske, Isabelle Thompson, Suzanne Homo, Eleanor Strache, and Margaret Anderson (Retzloff). Gold Star Chairman Mary Kantorski was in charge of the program and presented all the Gold Star members with corsages made by the McHenry County council and with a gift from the McHenry unit. The Sweet Adelines entertained the members and guests with a medley of songs. Special guests at the dinner were the Americanism essay winners, Denise Suchor, first place, Jane Weingart, second place, Loraine Forster, honorable mention, along with their mothers. Susan Peschke, third place winner, was unable to attend. Miss Denise Suchor read her winning essay and it was announced that her essay was entered in the district elimination competition. Marie Howe, Elgin Hospital chairman, told of the visit of forty-five Elgin veteran patients to the McHenry post home for a chicken dinner and entertainment and thanked the members for their donations of cookies and creature comforts and their assistance. Girl's State Chairman Marge Datz told members of the district Girl's State tea. She had as her guests, this years' Girl's Stater, Martha Rabbitt, alternate, Denise Higgins, and their mothers. The county Girl's State tea will be held in McHenry. Ruth Mrachek, National Security chairman, urged all members and interested persons to write to their Congressmen concerning the men of the Armed Forces who are still reported missing-in action. Edmund Petit officiating. On this special occasion Annette used her mother's Communion book and wore her mother's wedding veil. In the afternoon friends and relatives gathered at the Langer home for a buffet supper, which included a cake decorated with a Communion booklet which Annette will keep as a keepsake.
