"We have researched the town thoroughly and the Titusville Millinery Shoppe has been selected as one of the businesses we wanted most to write about. "Let me read you just a little bit of what we've written about YOUR firm..." What Dapper doesn't know is that the man on the other end of the line is what legitimate advertising people call a "FEATHER MERCHANT." The man has never been in Titusville in his life and his research consisted of looking in the Titusville telephone book. He's making one of about 90 calls he makes every day on his WATS long distance telephone line from a town in another state. In front of him on the table is a looseleaf folder with index tabs. Right now it's opened to the Millinerv" section and the Feather Merchant is reading to Dapper one of a half dozen mimeographed "stories" he has on file relating to women's wear business places. Dapper is entranced. He has her complete attention on the telephone and he skillfully guides the conversation while "Dapper's good customer cools her heels up by the girdle counter. You should hear the things he has written about her shop. He says it's the best place to shop iri the county, sells the very best clothing for very fair prices, and that everyone who ever traded there would never trade anyplace else anymore. Dapper gets a little jolt at the end of the conversation when she discovers that the "article" about her store will cost $40. But she is assured that her store has been especially selected and will be the only millinery store. If she does not wish it -- of course -- one of her competitors might appear instead. Dapper, hesitating just a moment, says "Okay" and off in another state the Feather Merchant puts a check mark in the "Yes" mark opposite her name. This story wasn't meant to be entertaining. The town isn't Titusville -- it's McHenry -- and if you weren't called by The Feather Merchant a few months ago, you will be soon. What Dapper doesn't realize -- besides the long-distance fake research and original "article" hoopla -- is that the Feather Merchant bought space in a newspaper and now is taking it out and reselling it for about 600 percent more than he paid for it... that Dapper could have put that $40 message in the paper herself in the same space for about $7. Among the things most legitimate newspapers won't do are: 1. Run a "news article" for pay. 2. Allow non-employees to Use the paper's name and resell their newspaper space at a higher rate. When the Feather Merchant calls^ou, just ask him a couple of questions: 1. Are you actually employed by the newspaper itself? 2. Are you calling me from here in town? When you get a "No" answer to both questions, hang up quickly and go wait on your customer -- you've just plucked a Feather Merchant. <3 Pictured are the new members received at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran church, 404 North Green street, McHenry, on Sunday.
