PAGE 18 - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. JUNE 21, 1974 Psychotic Streets Mark Ozark Mountain Town (by Father Wm. 0. Hanner). We have just returned from Eureka Springs, Ark., that town of i,800 population which in .the 1880's boasted 9,000. Then there was a railroad and there were street cars to take invalids and the sick to the spas and springs that abound. Few invalids come today but vacationers and retirees find it a pleasant place to visit or retire to. The town is built on the sides of an Ozark mountain. This makes for schizophrenic streets. The poor streets do not know where they are going. One street starts very bravely down a hill. It is a good sound healthy street. Then something happens to it. It Y's, that is, it splits two ways. One goes up one goes on down. Even then it has trouble; if you go up you find stores and a post office and homes and hotels much like a street is supposed to have. But, oh dear! Little side streets shoot off. They hurry around a corner and butt into a mountain wall. They really butt. The mountain does not move so the street perforce has to stop. There are no right angle turns. Right angle for these streets means straight up. No responsible street goes straight up. If you want to go up you go into a local hotel and ride aloft in the elevator and unload at the fourth floor on a street in back of the hotel. It is very hard to be a street in Eureka Springs. If you get all balled up reading this, think of the poor Arkansas traveler. If he wants to go into the Catholic church he enters from the top of the bell tower. Now let's go back to the other street of the Y. It goes on down hill. If you follow it you come to a mountain road called Mill Hollow road. Turn off up this road and you are in for a treat. The little road at first is not at its best. This road is a road of destiny. It climbs around busily and finally brings you to a turn and yells, "SURPRISE"! Sure enough there is a surprise. It is the mountain home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerald Hanks. The Hanks bought their house when it was a big log cabin. When they first saw it no one lived in it. They had to examine it from the outside tramping around the porch and ling through the windows. )me people have imagination. The Hanks possess this priceless gift. They bought the house and breathed life into it Some misguided folks call this remodeling. When you bring an old house alive this is more than remodeling. It comes dose to a sort of architectural raising of the dead. The Hanks' hillside home with its pleasant rooms and pictures, with its floors and rugs, with its porch and outside flowery tefracee makes you want to stay longer and longer. The Hanks are good hosts, they do not hurry you away. I got my business done. Mrs. Hank told us about the place. She showed us a stand of sticks. "These", she said, "are my snake sticks. I stir up the bushes before I work in my garden to get any lurking snakes away!" When we went to leate, Mr. Hank took my car in charge and drove me around and down to the road over a very steep and winding trail he had put in. There isn't room to turn at the house itself. Of course, it was raining most of the time we were at the Springs. We spent one entire day in bed reading while it poured a very wet rain outside. The rain was accompanied by heavy thunder and lightning. We got out of bed only to go eat. Comfortable thing to do once in awhile. Then there were the shops. Mrs. Hanner bought a very fancy big cover-all apron for about $12. When we got home she found them advertised in a national magazine for $18. She felt very good about that! There was a candy shop that made and sold fresh-very fresh, salt water taffy which is good for the waistline and the souls of taffy eaters. It makes both grow. There is an ancient hotel on, top a mountain where tours come and where you were served by college people in 1890 „ TA'A FRI. SAT. AJ® SUN. In another dining room we found a long view across the hills. We had plenty to do. We had a pleasant'week. The most fun were the people we met. There is a lot wrong with America but there is a lot right, too. We found mostly "right" things on this trip. Everywhere we go we find wonderful, happy, busy people--people who make and continue to make contributions to life. What do you find as you move about? Goodwill To Visit City Next Friday "The areas of rehabilitative services of Goodwill Abilities I center are in far greater demand than available materials and facilities," according to Mrs. Nick (Agnes) Adams, local representative. A Goodwill truck will be in McHenry Friday, June 28, to pick up clothing, shoes, housewares and other materials which the handicapped men and women can work on in a rehabilitation I program. Call Mrs. Adams for pickup. "Because good work habits and cooperation are assets in industry, Goodwill teaches the j art of getting along with others as well as the skill," Mrs. Adams reported. "The plan of monthly and weekly evaluation counseling is used at Goodwill. The goal is to help each person develop a well-rounded personality, and to build his [skills to the point where he can be employed in private industry. The people help this program every time they donate repairable discards or surpluses to Goodwill", continued Mrs. Adams. SEW WHAT?
