American Legion Auxiliary News UNIT 491 By Pearl Cooper The annual spring convention of the llth district of the American Legion auxiliary was held early in June at the St. Charles Legion post home. The delegates attending from the McHenry unit were Mrs. Lloyd (Midge) Scharf, president; Mrs. Roy (Lauretta) Homo, secretary) Florence McCann; Mrs. Edward (Marge) Datz, treasurer; and Mrs. Jack (Pearl) Cooper, secretary of the McHenry unit a n d C o m m u n i c a t i o n s chairman. Distinguished guests at the convention were Viveenne Zepp, St. Charles unit president; Unabelle Bueller, second division president; Winston Baumann, llth district commander; Elaine Murphy, Department of Illinois historian; L.D. Lingle, commander, St. Charles post; and the Mayor of St. Charles, Mr. Spread. Past district directors, presidents and division presidents were also introduced. Memorial services were conducted by Chaplain Eileen Johnson, assisted by the four county chaplains for eighty-six members of the district, including the five members from the McHenry unit. The committee chairman<• gave their reports. Children and Youth chairman of the McHenry unit received first place for her report and it was to go to division and state for judging. The McHenry Junior unit received a second place award for coupons. In communications, first place was awarded to Pearl Cooper of the McHenry unit and was to be sent to division for further judging (it was later learned that this book placed first in the 2nd division judging and has been forwarded tq the Department convention.) Second place for the Unit Communications Press book went to the Woodstock unit. McHenry unit received an award for having the most Gold Star members in the district, a total of eighteen. Election of officers for the new year was held and Eva Fabian of Joliet will be the next president; Jerreen Merritt, of Elmhurst was elected vice- president; Carrie Petrie of Elburn was elected as historian; Lauretta Homo of the McHenry unit was elected as chaplain and Eloise Knipp as treasurer. Mabel Schultz was endorsed as the 2nd division historian. - After an announcement from the Credential committee chairman that ninety-five delegates and guests were present, the meeting was adjourned. Refreshments were served by the members of the St. Charles unit.
