The fact is that a house was built on the ground above them. It was just by chance in attempting to dig a basement that they were discovered not too long ago. The main pool was quite like our high school pool in size and shape. There were several smaller pools in different rooms along the route of the water coming in and going out. The edges of the main pool were covered and high, round, ornamented stone columns held up the roof which provided a shaded walkway around the pool. The bottom of this great pool was entirely covered by thick sheets of lead. All of the water was warm. I believe it came from under ground hot springs. However, in one of the baths on the way out was an unique way of artificially heating the water with fire. Some of the water flowed through open troughs but in other cases it traveled through lead pipes. This intrigued me the most. Imagine lead pipes about 3 inches in diameter. They had a folded seam on top. The pipes were leaded together at the joints with a process that looked like our welding today. Imagine being able to do this without the aid of a Mow torch. I was deeply impressed with the skill, craftsmanship and knowledge of these first century Roman builders. The folks there told us they had cement that was superior to any we have today. They had baked bricks, many, many of them that were also superior to ours this day. Much knowledge has been lost, perhaps forever, and this is such a pity and such a waste. Brennan of 3902 White street, Solon Mills. 441 NEWS | CHERRY VALLEY CLUB The last meeting of the Cherry Valley 4-H club was held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Hoag. The meeting started off with a barrel contest between club members. Third place went to Robin and Dale Schmuhl and Carol Gable. Second place winners were Don Limbaugh and Bill Schmuhl. First place winners were Linda, Lora, Tammy and Susie Schiller. The barrel was taken to the fairgrounds for the barrel contest between the other 4-H clubs and placed fifth. Our club has a girls' and boys' softball team and plays at Northwood and Parkland schools. Project talks were given by Susie and Tammy Schiller, Robin and Dale Schmuhl. Neil and Cheryl Wright and Janice Atchison, Andy Hoag gave demonstrations. The next meeting will be in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Atchison. Refreshments were served after the meeting was adjourned. McHenry county Democrats were represented at the Freeport meeting by Dan McNulty and Joseph Splendoria of McHenry and Edward Brady of Woodstock. Illinois' 16th Congressional district includes the northern townships of McHenry County. It stretches from the Fox River to JoDaviess County and the Mississippi River.
