Lee Swetman, Children's Librarian Sunglasses A Must For Vacation Fun Unless you plan to spend your summer vacation exploring caves, the chances are that you and your family will be basking tn the sun, discovering America by car, camping in an unspoiled wilderness, or boating at a lake resort. Whatever your plans and vherever you go, sunglasses "nay add to vacation comfort, safety, and enjoyment, according to the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Although playing or working in the sun without eye protection seldom causes actual damage to eye tissues, it could cause discomfort. Three or four hours without sunglasses on a bright day can reduce your ability to see after sundown by 50 percent or more, the Society estimates. And, after only one day an the sun, it could take a full week without further exposure before you could expect to regain your normal night vision. The real danger here, according to Society spokesmen, concerns people who might be driving a car, piloting a boat, or working at a campsite after dark. Sight-seeing is a big part of vacation fun, the Society concludes. And the best and most comfortable way to sight- see in bright sun is through sunglasses.
