Lakeview Amateur Radio Association W9QQG held its annual Field Day at Anderson Acres near McHenry last weekend as part of a nation-wide exercise to promote emergency preparedness among the amateur radio operators of America. In modern times, communication plays a major role in life, and especially in case of an emergency. In the past, the amateur radio operator, or "ham" as he is sometimes known, has been the only link to the outside world during emergencies such as a flood, earthquake, tornado or just an accident on the highway. The purpose of this exercise, or Field day as it is called because the men operate in the field with portable power and equipment, is to contact as many other ham stations as possible, participating in the exercise during a 24-hour period. STAFF PHOTOS BY WAYNE GAYLORD disaster area. The paper work and field investigations are presently taking place and we should see some results very shortly. Another major factor is that, the gravel pits have closed their gates and gravel is not available at this time. Oil for gravel sections of the roads is also not available. We have tried and are still working at it. I'm sure that if you have not personally seen State of Illinois vehicles in the area doing the field investigations, your neighbor has told you. The second project going on at the same time is the dredging of the creek from Broadway to the Fox river. This is being done by the Department of Waterways of the State of Illinois. I personally have put in much time on both projects and can tell you that the creek work will be started within the next week or so. Your elected officials and appointed personnel are working and are very aware of the situation. Needless to say.
