ANSWERS * on fr I on £ FR ON Z £ on I Under Way--Stay clear of breakers. Don't go through them. To do so risks capsizing, swamping or possible damage from rocks Keep to the right in channels Slow down, observe speed limits. Keep red buoys to your right when returning from seaward. Keep the red buoys to your left when going seaward. Slow down when approaching anchored boats. This is "Safe Boating Week" and every effort is being made to show how to operate a boat safelv and save lives. Each year there are serious accidents on Fox River and the Chain-O-Lakes waters Most of them could have been avoided Some accidents are attributed to drinking That's sad Not just this year, but for many years we have given space on the sports page or pages to print boating news in the hope that maybe one life could be saved Sometimes we think the wrong people read the rules and warnirfgs We commend those who give so much time and talent to make boating safe and enjoyable--ami to save lives. That was quite a shin-dig the Marian Central boosters held for , Father Baunnhofer Wednesday night at McHenry Country Club. Kick Talley, Sports Editor of Chicago Today, and George Kelly, Assistant Football Coach af Notre Dame, entertained the croud with tales of the world of sports. Both have been around although they aren't so darned old As everybody in the county knows. Father Baumhofer was chosen to carry the heavy load of getting the Marian Central School built. Then, he opened the school as the first superintendent. They picked a big man for a big job and he came through like a champion Figures are out now predicting that "only" 450 persons will lose their lives on the highways over the Fourth of July holiday. Don't you hope your number won't come up. At least we know when this holiday is being celebrated. The Fourth is on the 4th. knocked in four runs for Bavaria Haus. John Huemann added to that with a single, a double, and a homerun. The third game of the night should have been called "Homerun Derby" as Old Bridge out- powered Fox Lake 13-5. Brian Ciesil had two homeruns and Bill Brennan slugged a grand slam for Old Bridge. Dick Kazlausky and Art Gjersten had homers for Fox Lake. During the week, Dave Sehaefer went 12 for 15 and raised his average for .423 to .561. For his efforts in helping Jake's post three wins this week, Dave has been nam Player of the Week. Membership is opened to anyone who is now a certified diver. Applications will also be considered from those individuals who are trained divers but have not yet been certified. McPhee said that the Civil Defense team has two certified diving instructors as members who can assist those not certified. The scuba team responds only at the request of the sheriff, police, fire department or rescue squad. The present membership of thirteen divers has received extensive advanced training from the Illinois Scuba Rescue and Recovery Association. The members buy their own equipment and volunteer their services Since January of this year, they have donated over 400 man hours to McHenry County. This not only included searching for drowning victims, but also in searching for items involved in a burglary. Those interested should contact the McHenry County Civil Defense office at Woodstock for additional information and for applications. Applications should be returned by July 15. Chapel Hill Girls Defeat Barrington Team Bruises and injuries are a part of any athlete's life and Chapel Hill's girls are no exception. They have broken fingers sprained thumbs and ankles, and various other injuries. One thing they do not lack, however, is spirit, as the girls showed last Wednesday when they played Ten-Pin in Barrington The girls committed a few errors, but their mighty bats helped them to a 29-14 win. This win gives them a 5-0 record. They jiave next week off, and hopefully their injured will be Tonyan Construction Co. Minor League BLUEBIRDS. Kneeling l-r are David Brunswick. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Finding Security In Retirement Put time at the top of the l ist when you begin to count your retirement benefits. Time is valuable if you must work part-time to bring in ad ditional income. It is also valu able if you have sufficient in come--because you have the time to do the things you l ike to do, t ime to give to community, church and civic projects and associations One gentleman, retired now for many years, has turned a hobby into a full-t ime venture He has always been a history buff, and he found that retire ment gave him the time to spend in the local l ibrary, where he found abundant material cover ing the early history .of his com munity. He talked to descendants of early settlers and town lead ers, and they made available to him valuable personal materials and mementos When the town celebrated "Founder's Day," he was asked to write a brief history for the local newspaper This lead to new contacts, a new wealth of material , and new recognition as the town's historian He's a busy man now He speaks frequently to civic groups, school classes, and he's now writ ing his own town history Not all of us are will ing to pursue a hobby with such vigor But, with retirement, we do have the time to spend on the things sufficiently recovered to play in their next game against Union 76.
