Ringwood unit of the Home Bureau won the prize for the unit having the largest per cent of members present at roll call McHenry Cadet Wins Academy Science Award CRAIG WORKINGER Scholastic awards were presented to deserving cadets during the graduation ceremonies held recently at St. John's Military academy in Delafield, Wisconsin. Cadet Craig T. Workinger was the recipient of the Introduction to Physical Science award which is given to the outstanding student in the subject. Johnson of Empire Theatre has installed a new 30 inch three phase motor fan in conjunction with the cylinder blower. Kalph Bennett and "Spot" Thurwell are playing baseball with the Waukegan Cardinals this season Thurwell pitches and Bennett plays second base. Miss Lillian Doherty with the Misses Teresa, Lticy and Rose Howden of Richmond are enjoying a week's camping at a Wisconsin Lake. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 14, 1949 > Albert E. Nye! 64 years old, passed away July 9 at the Harvard hospital. He was co- publisher of the Harvard Herald. He was superintendent of the local schools in McHenry for nine years. The Andrew Butler family has moved from Chicago to the home of her father, Henry Heimer, in West McHenry. Dr Joseph P. Frey of Regner Road, Pistakee Bay, left aboard the Queen Mary on July 6 for Europe, where he will spend four weeks visiting Paris, London, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. At the present time approximately 400 people in McHenry county are receiving unemployment compensation according to Henry Falber in charge of the local office. A new Woodworking plant at Ridgefield will open August 1 with O.J. Roeser as the new operator. He has had forty- three years experience in woodworking. An airplane which has been circling over farm land in the McHenry area this past week has been the cause of great interest among both city and rural residents. The pilot is Bob Allen, representing Midwest Crop Savers of Mattoon, 111., who was brought here by the Dairyman's Supply company. The purpose of the plane's appearance in this locality is to destroy cornborers which have been plentiful this year because of the great height of the corn. Three quarts to an acre of 25 per cent emulsion D.D.T. is being used to control the pests. David Wohnrade, 6, of lakeland Shores received a badly broken arm and bruises when he was involved in an accident on Meadow Lane in Lakeland Park. The local fire department was called to Shalimar to assist a young boy, Jeffrey Wise, who had received bruises on his arm when it was caught in a washing machine wringer. Professor and Mrs. Do Thi Le announce the marriage to be July 18 of their daughter Do Thi Kim Dung of Saigon, Vietnam, to Capt. Arthur Barbier of McHenry. The wedding will take place at the Queen of Peace church in Saigon. Ron Bykowski of Tones Musical enterprises, McHenry, attended the 1964 National Association of Music Merchant convention and music show at the Conrad Hilton hotel Mrs. Mathilde G. Vallancourt, 71, of Wonder Lake, died in McHenry hospital, July 14. She had lived in the Wonder Lake area for two years but had been a resident in this area for twenty- five years Political Dan Malone Seeks To Fill Clerk Office Dan Malone, a Crystal Lake businessman and community leader, has filed as Democratic candidate for McHenry County Clerk. Malone's papers were accepted by County Clerk Vernon Kays, his November opponent. The^McHenry County Democratic Central committee named Malone to replace Mrs. Nancy Wade, who withdrew as a candidate. Proceeds from this function enable the league to purchase new equipment. and uniforms. The dance begins at 8 p.m.; tickets may be purchased at the door or from Little League team members. A little note to be on the lookout for the Little Leaguers in your neighborhood who will be out selling decals for the next couple of weeks This activity also helps defray costs incurred by the league LOST AND FOUND A pair of glasses was recovered from the beach area last week. They are a child's prescription glasses and I'm sure the owner would be grateful for their recovery I have them in my possession. If anyone knows who the owner might be, please pass this information on to them. They might also like to know that the glasses were recovered by area youths and they took the time and effort to try to track down the owner. These girls are to be commended for their unselfishness. OTHERSPORTS ACTIVITIES It certainly is wonderful that we are having such magnificent weather lately. Many of our area youths are taking advantage of it by participating in sports. The McHenry Girls Softball league continues on its winning streak with an outstanding 31-1 victory in their game against Huntley on Friday, June 28. Among the players on the team are Debbie Mahon, Eileen Connell, and Denise Hughes. The Little League Senior League or Babe Ruth League lias an impressive standing. There are two 'A' teams from Island Lake this year. The Island Foods team has a 5-2 record, and B&V Standard team holds a 4-3 win-loss standing. Tim Hughes and Rob White are both members of the B&V Standard team and Tom Lundelius is the catcher for the Island Foods team. The teams play against teams from Fox Lake, Burton's Bridge and Richmond-Burton. The Little League Major leaguers will compete in an all- star game against other Little League teams in the county. All twelve year players compete in the games.
