Since the new cameras require little more than the click ,-of a shutter for clear color pictures, the amateur too often tends to simply approach an outdoor subject, aim and shoot. If that's the way you work, STOP. Before you shoot, look at the pictures from several angles, check the lighting conditions, ask yourself what you want to convey. What does this picture say to you? A picture is one idea in sharp focus. Keep it simple, uncluttered. A pocket Instamatic camera gives you time to concentrate on your composition. Think about your picture options. Is a closeup of the fisherman's face more dramatic than a middle distance shot? What about two pictures of the same subject? Should you frame your picture of the mountains with an over hanging bough or some prominent foreground object? Would this seascape be more interesting if there were people playing in the surf? Like any other finely manufactured piece of equipment, your camera requires careful handling. Before leaving for the great outdoors, check your camera. Expose a roll of film to make sure it's operating efficiently. When traveling, place your camera in a special carrying case to protect it, and keep your film in a cool container. If you're going by car, don't leave the film on a heated dashboard or in a hot glove compartment. Put it on the floor behind the driver's seat. If you're traveling to your destination by plane, carry your film on board to protect against fogging from x-ray detection devices. Take lens cleaning tissue with you on your outdoor vacation, and before you shoot, dust off the lens and the camera viewfinder. When you're changing film, dust the inside of your camera with a cotton swab. Camera movement spoils pictures. When you snap too fast, you may well wind up with a blurred horizon, a fuzzy snapshot of a forest ranger, a shaky campsite scene. Study your picture subject then gently squeeze the shutter. A good picture is worth a thousand words. Take the time to compose it. spurqeons, SIDEWALK DAY SAT.
