•SUPPLEMENT TO Mc HENRI PLAINDEALER, PAGE 23 -%JULY 10, 1974 Fishing -- Near Drilling Rigs, Better than Ever Sport and' commercial fishermen off the coast of Louisiana almost unani mously agree that the fish ing is better than ever. More and bigger fish are being caught, and the marine population is growing not only in numbers but in spe cies as well. Nugent Brasher, Jr., a sport fisherman and direc tor of the Louisiana Wild life Federation, believes that the natural gas and oil drilling and production opeiations off the Louisiana Coast are responsible for the tremendous marine life population explosion. "The rigs (as the offshore platforms are known to fishermen) provide food and shelter for marine life, offer protection for the fisher man should a boat break down or severe weather en danger him, and offer navi gational aids to the mari ner," states Brasher. "Every day there are fish ermen who leave a coastal Louisiana port and venture offshore to test their skills on some of the finest fishing in the United States. Almost without exception, these fishermen go to platforms established by the petro leum industry." Burr Tettleton, a Gulf Coast geologist, has told the Interstate Oil Compact Commission that "every rig is a haven for multitudes .'• *" • *w" J Migratory fish are attracted to the convenient home that drilling rigs offer. of fish. There are no barren oil platforms. "We've proved there's food, shelter and attach ment at every water level . . . fish accumulate in and around the platforms not only because of these needs but also because they are simply attracted to them." The offshore drilling and production operations have created other influences in the Gulf which favor sport and commercial fishermen. One such influence is the flare of burning non-com mercial volatiles. These flares are favorite spots for night fishing and a catch of 200 speckled trouts (spot ted weakfish) per night is not uncommon. Fishermen have also found that abandoned plat form locations and rig sites are excellent places to find fish. Underwater completion installations are known ha vens for fish and are fished by both commercial and sport fishermen. Pipelines along the Gulf floor create bottom expres sions along which fish con centrate, and underwater vents which allow volatiles to bubble to the surface offer one of the unique fish ing holes in the Gulf.
