Certain people have laughed when we sent in those entries for cash prizes of 50 or 100 thousand dollars or a new home. We knew our day would come. The envelope stated there was a check, enclose. So we opened it with Moving care. Yep. There was a check all right - For ten cents! Guess you have to start small. McHenry has a very efficient Meter Maid. So efficient is that Irish lass that one day she drove an unmarked police car down to Riverside Drive,, parked it, made her rounds- And put a ticket on her police car. No favoritism with that gal. They all look alike to her. After watching Jim Kaat pitch a 2-hitter against the Detroit Tigers and Sox hitters playing bombs away, we have decided to reorder our World Series tickets. Bill Melton's turnabout has to be the big inspiratitjn to the Sox. Not only his hitting, but his fielding has been sensational. We think sports writers (the 0' meanies) should give the Cubs a chance. Haven't they heard the team is rebuilding. Give the kids a chance. When they grow up, it will be time to let 'em have it. were around the edge and there was dancing in the middle of the room. Sunamangon we had softie fun. Picked up a sore throat and haven't smoked a cigar in two days That's penance. Always said you women don't know what suffering we go through. Good O' Dizzy Dean had a big heart, but the ticker failed this week and Diz is gone to a place where we hope they have baseball games. Dean was a great pitcher for the famous Gas-House Gang in St Louis. He was the kind who bragged about his pitching then backed it up with his fast ball. They have told some great stories about 01' Diz since he hung up his spikes. In 1931 when Dean was only 20 years old, the Cardinals sent him down to Houston for more experience. Diz didn't like it and told all in hearing distance, "That's the first time a team ever lost 25 games in one day ; "cause that's how many I was going to win for this here club" Then there was the time the Dean brothers pitched a double header against the Dodgers. Diz pitched a 3-hit shutout in winning the first game 13-0. When Paul pitched a no-hitter in the second game, Diz said, "Heck, if I'd known Paul was going to pitch a no-hitter, I'd have had me one, too." They say De&fi drove school teachers goofy When he started broadcasting ball games. When he said somebody "slud" into second, that's what the kids said. A great sports figure has left us. There won't be another just like 01' Diz, but we wish somebody close would come along. Some of the 3-D animals created l»y the Northern Illftni Bowmen club members. Northern Illini Bowmen News Demolition Derby- Coming To McHenry County Fair Aug. 3 Some genius could get rich designing a woman's purse with a zipper at the bottom. That's where they keep everything anyway. --Earl Wilson We like to go to Hettermann's once in a while. Besides the small town atmosphere and, pleasant reception, our interest goes way beyond. In our courtin' days and sometimes after we were f married, that was a favorite Saturday night spot. Tables Bob Schmaling beat Bob Newkirk. Class D winners were Bruce Domoto over Ed Ray and Jim Kenton over Ed Oja. The finals of the President's Tournament will be held at the club on Sunday, July 28. Also a reminder that the club championship begins on Sunday, August 4. The famous Nation-Wide Demolition Derby is coming to McHenry County Fair on Saturday, Aug. 3. Expert "Gear Jammers" and "Throttle Benders" will stage deliberate crashes. Men and women with plenty of nerve and a lust for thrills will compete for the cash prize and trophies. The participants must supply their own cars. The car must be equipped with a safety seat belt and the driver must wear an approved crash helmet. Official rules and entry blanks may be obtained from Everett Hunter; Jim Pederson; Fair office on fairgrounds and at many gas stations and garages in the county. All participants must be over 21 or have a notarized release signed by their parents. Only American-made, hardtop automobiles are eligible. No special bumpers or reinforcements will be permitted, but not required. The spectators are urged to cheer for their favorite driver. The event has been described by one newspaper editor as the "Wildest", most spectacular sporting event in the world. Because of the nature of the event, no spectators will be permitted in the infield. Therefore, they are urged by officials to come early and get a choice seat in the grandstand. All the excitement gets under way at 8 p.m. Aug. 3 when the McHenry County Fair presents the deadly and dangerous Demolition Derby. Northern Illini Bowmen of McHenry invite the public to their 17th annual SAFARI to shoot, if an archer, or just to observe a fun shoot in a sport that is growing fast in popularity. The "SAFARI" is aga|p this year in 3-D. This means Safari animals to shoot are all third dimensional, life sized of styrofoam, handmade by the archery club members. Everything from a 14 foot elephant to 8 inch scorpions are targets for the enthusiastic bowman. Tigers, panthers, an 8 foot gorilla, hyena and monkeys swinging from trees, roam the NIB range on SAFARI this weekend for the most realistic bow hunting this side of Africa. Many of |Jie 3-D SAFARI animals including the 14 foot elephant can be observed from a wide centrally located walking path. There is no fee and not necessary to walk the entire range to watch this sport event including shooters, moving targets and interesting 3-D animal targets. Multiple registration opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 20 and remains open till 1 p.m. Sunday, July 21. The Safari may be shot more than once with the highest score in contention for trophies thru third place in all classes. An archer not belonging to any organized club may also be in contention for the special gold trophies. Northern Illini Bowmen especially invite all interested sportsmen and archers to their 17th Annual 3-D SAFARI held at the outdoor range on Draper Road, just a mile west of McHenry, July 20 and 21.
