I PAGE 24-SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER-WED., JULY 31, 1974 Touches of greenery can help to make rooms softer, prettier It doesn't take an ecolo- gist to appreciate what In door plants can do to im prove any home's atmos phere. Touches of green, particularly as winter ap-- proaches, seem to give ev eryone's spirits a pleasant lift. "There's virtually no limit to the ways you can use plants to dress up a home or apartment," ob served decorating consult ant Mary Ann Wills. Besides such obvious spots as window sills, book shelves, and table tops, there's the "hanging gar den" approach to consider. One doesn't, of course, have to follow the example of King Nebuchadnezzar, who had the famous Hang ing Gardens of Babylon built around 600 B.C. -- supposedly to satisfy his homesick wife Amytis, who missed the gardens of her own native land. For today's plant enthu siast, there are all sorts of much easier hane-up possibilities, including decorative wall planters from Burwood Products Company, the Traverse City, Mich., manufacturer Miss Wills serves as deco rating consultant. While most of these planters are intended mainly for decorative ef- GO IN FOR GREENERY, and for the country-rustic look at the same time, with this quaint Colonial lantern planter styled by Burwood Products Company, Traverse City, Mich. Reproduced from an original hand-carved design that dup licates the texture of hammered metal, the 25-inch high lantern hangs from a quaint wall bracket 22 inches high, projecting nearly 13 inches from the wall. Artificial philo- dendron comes with the planter, but may be replaced by a small potted plant, if you wish. Finished choices are antique black or metal gold for a dressy look. feet, some incorporate waterproof containers to display living greenery. In both cases a supply of realistic make-believe English ivy or philoden- dron branches is provided. So planters may be put up immediately without wait ing for assistance from Mother Nature. "As rewarding as it may be to nurture plants and watch them grow, the fact is that not all of us have the knack for keeping them healthy," Miss wills observed. "Besides, there are some areas in almost all homes and apartments where conditions simply aren't conducive to grow ing any kind of plant. "Halls, stairwells, and reception foyers, for in stance, very often are lacking in natural light," she noted. "Yet they're the very places that most need the softening touch of leafy greens to offset a barren feeling." Since some of these areas may also be short on floor space, a wall planter with carefully arranged plastic greenery provides the easiest possible solu tion to an otherwise diffi cult decorating problem. Going along with the e ac h-to-his-own-taste rule, Burwood offers hang up planters in virtually all of today's popular deco rating moods. There are styles suggesting Mediter ranean grillwork and sev eral in lavish traditional designs. For nostalgia buffs, one current planter looks like Victorian wickerwork, while another recreates the old rooster weather- vane in simulated wrought iron. If you happen to be cap tivated by the new coun try-rustic look that's in vading home fashion these days, perhaps your choice will be a brand new Colon ial Lantern planter finish ed in a choice of antique black or lustrous metal gold. Unlike most planters, which hang flat against the wall, this new design is composed of a quaint 25-inch high lantern that hangs from the arm of a matching bracket. Both Karts have the look of ammered metal, like that done by Colonial black smiths. "The planter comes with artificial philodendron," Miss Wills reported. "But the design is such that one could easily insert a small potted plant and enjoy watching its branches flourish from all four open sides of the hanging lan tern." Whether or not you're lucky enough to claim a "green thumb," there's no reason why you shouldn't have the pleasure of greenery in the rooms where you live. Real or make-believe, plants are / fun to have. Children could use 'growing' furniture Children grow quick ly--too quickly for most parents. When buying furniture, especially junior chairs and ta bles, try to make sure they will "grow" with the child, i.e., get pieces which can accommo date a child's growing needs. As the child grows, the clothing gets larger and bulkier, a consideration when c h o o s i n g b u r e a u s , dressers, etc. McHenrys Favorite Sport Center 1210 NORTH GREEN ST. • McHENRY PH. 385-1000 $ Day Specials See Our Many More Items In Store For $ Savings For Back-To-School Etc.
