X JL High Recommendation For One-Day Vacation Hv Fathpr Wm i \ l-l n nn<kM a m •» w < • . . (By Father Wm O. Manner, retired Episcopal pastor) The other day Mrs. Manner and 1 took an afternoon and evening vacation. It came about this way. We have friends of nearly twenty years standing in Wilmette, the Russell Bennetts. They love to travel as we do. A week or so back we were having dinner with them in their Wilmette home when the talk turned to cheeses. The Bennetts had been to France and had had dinner in world famed restaurant in I^AN BIBLE SCHOOL - Thursday, Aug. IS through Friday, Aug. 23, are the days for the 1974 Daily Vacation Bible school at the Wonder Lake Bible church, 7501 Howe road, Wonder Lake. These superintendents are busy finalizing their department's activities and looking forward to teaching boys and girls about the Lord Jesus, using "Jesus Is The Way" as the central theme. Many things have been planned: Bible and missionary stories, a charm course, making and using puppets, gun safety, archery, and handicraft. There will be bus service provided for both east and west sides of Wonder Lake. To cover costs of Bible school, donations are asked. All boys and girls who have completed kindergarten through the eighth grade are invited to attend. Pictured left to right, front row, are Mrs. Grace Swanson, Mr. Lyle Wright and Mrs. Arlene Wright; second row, Mrs. Barbara Schuerr, Mrs. Jane Spiering, Mrs. Joy Doles, Mrs. Carole Mitterling. Third row: Mrs Bobbie Hart, Mr. Roy Swanson. Mrs. Phyllis Batdorff and Mrs. Irene Menolasino. Paris as I remember. There they had indulged their fondness for cheese and had ordered servings of Brie. A close and dear friend of mine, with whom I love to visit, Noah Webster, long ago wrote a dictionary. Me says of Brie cheese that "it is a ripened, soft, white cheese made in France or elsewhere and named for Brie a region in France lying east of Paris." The Bennetts, having finished their French dinner, awaited the serving of the cheese with eager expectation. When it arrived upon the table they inspected it and its wrapping with loving and devoted care -- but imagine their amazement and profound surprise when they found inscribed upon the wrappings an English wording: BRIE, made in Lena, Illinois -- U.S.A. We laughed and joked about this but I tucked it in the back of my head and determined to visit Lena at the very first opportunity. I had a memory of our Mike when he was in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois going to Lena one weekend with Bob Etnyre, a classmate, to get some practical architectural education by helping with some shingling at Bob's aunt's farm near Lena. Bob is now a captain in the United States Marine corps. So last week one day when it was cool and clear Mrs. H. and I embarked after lunch for Lena. It is a town of 1,700 and lies fifteen miles northwest of Freeport, in Stephenson county. We went out to Belvidere on 176 and there picked up 20 west 'til we came to the Lena road. Lena is a clean, well ordered town with broad streets and mcely kept vegetable and flower gardens. There are shady trees and wide walks along which shopping farmers move from store to store. There are no "fancy" restaurants but I II bet there are places that could fill you up pretty well It is not known that anyone ever starved in Lena. We made a bee line for the cheese factory and sampled and tasted and bought. There were Brie and Carnembert and creamy Swiss, plus Port Salut and a number of other tasty products -- we found some good sausage, too They have gift packages of cheese and we sent some off even if it was summer. I didn t want Mike to miss this trea t We found a beautiful small green golf course, nine holes I yearned to come back and play it - its nine holes cross and recross a meandering brook A battleground of the Blaekhawk War lies nine miles southwest where on June 15, 18.12, ( olonel John Demant. fought the Indians, losing twenty-five men. A granite shaft marks the site. Four miles north of town is the I,ake I.e-Aqua-Na State park, with its 614 acres of lake and woody shore with gwd fishing, picnicking and hiking. The northwestern part of Illinois is hilly and wooded- beautiful in every season Here the elevation rises to over 1 200 feet We drove back through Roekford and had dinner there. We were home nine hours after we left It was a nice one-day vacation. Try "vacationlets" some time They break up the monotony. We are going to the Wisconsin State Fair early in August -- Whitnell Park - a great garden and horticultural FORD MAC DONALD NEW CAR SALE MERCURY!
