Demon possession dates back to the time of Christ. The rite of exorcism can be traced to the second century where godly men required discipline of fasting and prayer in order that they might be able to exorcise demons. Ancient exorcism rites in the Roman Catholic Church predate the Reformation, and a variation of the ritual has been preserved in the Angli- Mrs. Kopp is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John Kunter of Genoa City, and one son, Charles A. The Ceremonies are rarely used today, though. The Roman chufch provides the exorcist with precise in structions that, if carried out exactly, will keep him from making hasty conclusions as to whether or not a person is really demon possessed. Clement Connally, secretary to Cardinal Timothy Manning of Los Angeles said, "The solemn rite of exorcism has not been used in that arch diocese for at least ten years." He went on to say that there is no living memory of it. But he added that the chancery office gets about ten calls a year from people who think they're de mon-possessed. These indivi duals are referred to local priests, according to Mr. Connally, and no more is I'AfiK 17 - l'l,AIN'>KAI,t usually heard from tnese cases. According to R l s < I I Chandler in a recent n« w. article, in Houston last monlH a Catholic: priest performed an informal exorcism on an abandoned house known as "Devil's Quarters." It report edly had been used as a church for pagan worship, and workmen remodeling the structure had been frightened by strange noises. In San Francisco, a minis ter of the Russian Catholic Center reported performing 13 ceremonies of exorcism on a suburban house where the family had been disturbed by strange happenings for several months. These and other re ports of exorcisms have been heard recently. I personally do not believe :it-Kltll)AY, AUGUST l«. 1974 J in demon ,wNKession, as It was pictured in the movie "ThUx' Exorcist"; that is, that Satan actually takes up residence in an individual. I do believ#' that every person is in»^< fluenced by Satan, and that, to the dfgtee that we allow him to have his influence irv»;i our lives, to thai degree we„*] are demon-possessed. , .. I personally do not believe- that Satan singles oi'i indivi- ( duals, lives in them, and * causes them to behave in the manner of the young girl de-' .* picted in the movie "The'" Exorcist." Nor do I believe that only a special group such-^ as priests or clergy have the'1 right or authority to be able' to cast out the influence and ' power of Satan. Satan is cast from us through obedience to the gospel of Christ WE NOW HAVE HOME GROWN SWEET CORN Plus Many Other Fresh Fruits and Vegetables.
