(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR. Life is turned around for us. In the last month we have attended three weddings and nary a ball game. The Randy Jackson-Colleen Doherty marriage was beautiful and the reception enjoyable with sociability just to our liking. Grandman Vera Doherty and Uncle Ben and Aunt Rosie Tonyan were the real Senior Citizens in the crowd---all looking sharp. This time we didn't get to kiss the bride, but we got a pretty good smacker from her mother. A lot of good people have i ome out of Spring Grove and a lot of good citizens have lived in the area all their lives. Found out that Laurence Rudolph is a Spring Grover. Of course, he's much younger than those old boys we mentioned. Well, a couple of years younger' anyhow! Swing your partner--and be happy you can dance to help others. The Johnsburg Rescue Squad is sponsoring a dance at the Johnsburg Community Club (Where else?) on Saturday, August 24. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased from any member of the Squad. Suppose Fred "Twinkletoes" Meyer is real happy now that his damyankees have beaten our White Sox three out of four. For all statistical purposes, our Sox aren't out of the pennant race yet, but, who likes statistics? The games you lose in the spring come back to haunt you in the fall. The best pitcher the Sox have is 01 Jim Kaat, but they never get any runs when he is on the mound. He must think it 's a revoltin' development. Junior Freund is all agog over his Cubs and their winning streak. Since we are President of the "Be Kind to Downtrodden Club Fans Club" we didn't mention his streakers losing eight straight games recently-Far be it from us to mention such things. Going out to dine one evening, our eager young grandson, Brendan, said, "Let's go to some fancy place like McDonald's or MpNeil 's." Just goes to show/'what nigh ratings those places enjoy. At this writing we don 't have the results of the golf matches at McHenry Country Club Did hear that Eddie Buss is in the lead for the Club Championship, with Gary Adams breathing down his neck Swanson Chalet Ousts Rusty Nail Team 6 to 4 By Pat Wirtz Swanson Chalet gained for the second successive year a berth in the championship finals. They did it by getting by a good Rusty Nail team 6 to 4. The Chalet will meet undefeated Jakes' Dead End Lounge Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoon (if a third game is necessary). Rusty Nail, after evening the series with a 12 to 9 victory in game two, could not put any offensive together in losing the third and final game to Swanson s. The Chalet's outfield proved to be the difference as Ed Raske, Ray Franklin and Rick Vycital came up with the outstanding catches. Franklin made the game saver in the final inning as he pulled in a long drive to right center off the bat of Jim Grey - a ball which would have been a homerun in any other game! Rusty Nail 120 001 0-4 Swanson Chalet 410 001 x-6 The first run of the game was scored by Rusty Nail as Leon Schmitt doubled and Gary Schmitt drove him in with a single. The Chalet came back strong in their half of the first with a four run rally, which might have been bigger if not for the third base coach's interference. Ed Raske, Bill Rudolph and Ray Franklin hit successive singles to begin with and after one out Gary Fields singled in another. Paul Adams hit an infield single and Dale Snell walked to bring in a run. Bob Freund singled past third for the final run of the inning. Two runs scored in the second as Jim Grey lined the fastest, hardest hit ball this writer has ever seen (maybe I should rephrase that since I was on the mound at the time and truthfully never saw it!) Anyway after the pitcher recovered to make the throw he was off balance and the errant throw went by the first baseman, two runners scoring. Bill Rudolph helped the Chalet in the bottom of the second with his third homerun of the series, a two out solo blast Bob Freund scored another Chalet run in the fourth, then after hitting his second single, Pat Wirtz singled him to third and Ed Raske hit a sacrifice fly for run number 6. Rusty Nail, after the second inning, hit safely only four times and scored their last run in the sixth on Gary Busse and Gary Miller's base hits followed by Kevin Bauer's sacrifice fly. Gary Schmitt. Gary Busse and Bill Comstock all went 2 for 3 for Rusty Nail while Paul Adams. Bill Rudolph and Bob Freund went 2 for 3 for Swanson Chalet. In the championships, Swanson Chalet, last year's championship and first place team will face this year's first place team, Jake's Dead End Lounge. Jake's, which went undefeated in regular league play, won their semi-final games over Jerry's Phillip's 66 by scores of 28 to 8 and 11 to 10. In league play Jake's won twice over Swanson's by scores of 16 to 11 and 13 to 4, and thus remain the favorites in the 1974 championship series. Because of a downstate softball tournament the first game has been moved back from Tuesday, Aug. 21, to Wednesday, Aug.22. The second game of the best 2 of 3 series will be played on Thursday, Aug. 23, with both games slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. If necessary, a third game will be played on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The league All-Star game will be played Sunday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. if the championship series is concluded on Thursday. Otherwise the game will follow the championship game. Remember, all league players, umpires, family and friends are invited. Also the games are all played behind West Campus high school.
