Sept. 25, Oct. 2 & 9,1974) Marian Central Counts Increased Enrollment Marian Central Catholic high school recently began its sixteenth year of operation with an enrollment of 670 students. Marian is McHenry county's on|y Catholic high school, Principal Thomas J. Parsley announces that the 1974-1975 enrollment figure is the highest since the 1966- 67 school year, and represents a 21 per cent increase over last year. The class breakdown on enrollment is as follows:v Freshmen, 221; sophomores, 166; juniors, 168 and seniors, 116. There are nine new facultv members joining the Marian staff for the current year. New to the English Department are Nancy Cummings <M.S.-Northwestern u n i v e r s i t y ) ; B a r b a r a Macl^eond (B.S.-University of Illinois); and Christine Vosti (Lawrence college). Other new instructors are Dominic Riccardino < M S.-Northern Illinois university) in Social Studies, Charles Bilow (B.S.­ Michigan Teach) in M a t h e m a t i c s ; S a n d r a Samardzich < B.S.-Southern Illinois university) in Physical Education; Robert Hoffman ( B . Paritculary affected are the B u s i n e s s E d u c a t i o n , Mathematics, Social Studies and English departments where several new courses Lakemoor-Lilymoor Alma Hueckstaedt 385-5689 Young People Given Picnic By Parents For Youth The Parents for Youth held a picnic for all the young people of Lakemoor on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the little beach on Lily Lake. The turnout was excellent, helped, no doubt by the beautiful weather. Everyone enjoyed the day of fun and food, hotdogs with all the trimmings, sweet corn, orangeade and watermelon were served, followed by lollipops for all and topped off with a marshmallow roast. Donations were received from all the farmers, merchants and the residents of the area which helped so much to make for a successful day, also the parents gave of their time and effort. LADIES LEAGUE The ladies met on Wednesday, Sept. 19 for their social night. Films Selected From Stated Audience have been added Marian is offering 134 courses during this year with a total instructional staff of thirty-two faculty members. The approximate pupil-teacher ratio is twenty-two to one. As a result of the 1973 North Central evaluation, a c o m m u n i t y A d v i s o r y committee was established and this group will soon begin to function for the 1974 75 school year. A study will be made by the Advisory committee in the following programs; Athletic and co-curricular, Art, and Music, Speech and Debate, and three-year or early graduation. Marian Central is also maintaining the policy of requiring more course work from students than is expected by state of Illinois standards. Four years of-*- English and Religion are required, as well as two years of mathematics. The Freshmen Focus program, a series of "mini-' courses<4n Art, Music, Study Skills, Grob^ Counseling, Library Skills, Career Exploration, Personal Typing and Mythology, continues to be required of all ninth graders. Marian students, therefore, carry six subjects during a seven-period class day; some students elect to carry seven. The baya, a bird native to India, builds a long, narrow, cylindrical nest, with the opening at the bottom. To overcome the darkness inside, it gathers a few lightning bugs and fastens them to the inside walls. Two Youths Among "Who's Who" Students To local high school students were among those named recently to the eighth annual ediiton of "Who's Who Among American High School Students for the 1973-74 academic year. Linda Anne Randall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Becker of 2921 W Victoria, was a senior at West campus where she earned recognition for her achievements Jerry Pepping, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pepping of 3105 W. Virginia was also honored " for his participation in West campus activities while a junior. While at West campus, Linda was active in cheerleading, chorus, concert and marching band. She was also a member of the National Honor society and the Modern Music Masters society. She plans to enter the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater to further her education Jerry was recognized for his participation in Cross Country, track, Babe Ruth baseball league and sports writer for the school newspaper. He also attained the honor roll at West, earned the most improved varsity award in cross country and was named to all-conference in cross country He plans to attend college after graduation. SEPTEMBER 28,19ft Goodwill To Visit McHenry The Goodwill truck will be in McHenry Friday / Sept. 27, to collect repairable clothing, shoes and housewares for the h a n d i c a p p e d w o r k e r s , according to Mrs. Nick (Agnes) Adams, local representative. For pickup arrangements, bags, club programs and information, call Mrs. Adams. The entire program of Goodwill is planned to help the handicapped person measure up to his physical, mental and social potentials, as well as to the reality of his disability. Clothing, shoes, toys, housewares and small appliances are used in the Goodwill sheltered workshop to provide employment, training and rehabilitation. Primarily, the agency is a rehabilitation agency and nearly one-third of the trainees are advanced referrals to schools or trade schools and workshops, move into industry and private employment annually. Because of the limitations of the trainees, some items can not be accepted to advantage. A guided tour through the workshop or a pictorial presentation will clarify this matter and this can be arranged by your local Goodwill representative. Williamsburg, Virginia, is widely known as a restored pioneer village: very few people, however know of a similar, but smaller, restoration in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where 12 buildings restored to their 1766 condition are open to the public. NO WHALE -BUT Larry Johnson of McHenry has tried his fishing skills in Lily Lake a few times without much luck until Sept. 6 when he caught a 5Vz pound bass. When it was all over all Larry could say was "You should've seen the one that got away." IN CLOSING I am sure a lot more people went on vacations other than those I've already written about.
