(STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Urge More Active Role In Crim e Prevention Sheriff Tyrrell of jVlcHenry county has emphasized again the need for every citizen »• take a more active role in crime prevention. He stated that with HI',I figures showing an overall if) percent increase in crime throughout the nation, it i^ obvious the police cannot alone cope with the problem. He quoted Ferris E. Lucas, executive director of the National Sheriff's association, as saying that much crime is victim-assisted He asked, "How many times have each of us been guilty of leaving an unattended car or truck unlocked, or not checking to make sure all doors and windows are secured before leaving our home or business?" Sheriff Tyrrell continued saying that wjth children now back in school, many with mothers who work during the school year, there are fewer persons in any neighborhood who might notice thief or burglar at work This increases the possibility of successful daytime intrusions, and, coupled with the longer hours of darkness, intensifies the problem of preventing or controlling crime Sheriff Tyrrell described a program being conducted locally which is designed to decrease criminal opportunity by increasing citizen awareness and involvement. This is the National Neighborhood Watch project, being conducted through his office.
