PAGE PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4. 1*74 harvest by about five percent resulting in a loss of $900 million to $400 million to Illinois farmers, according to preliminary estimates from the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The new reductions are in Mr# Reduced Early Frost temperatures early will probably reduce corn and soybean KILLS FALL WEEDS WHILE IT FERTILIZE S addition to earlier department predictions of lower than anticipated yieldB made when Illinois went through unusual flood and drought conditions. Much of Northern Illinois suffered medium to heavy fnst and areas as far south as White County experienced at least some frost. Temperatures as low as 23 degrees were reported in Jo Daviess and Kane Counties on Sunday and Monday nights. Agriculture Director Robert J. "Pud" Williams said, "Because of heavy spring rains followed by drought conditions in July and early August, much of this year's crop was planted late, making it especially vulnerable to an early frost. "For example, last year at this time about 70 percent of the state's soybean plants were mature and shedding leaves. Now only about 30 percent of the bean crop has reached this point. Immature plants lulled by the early frost will yield smaller, lighter beans, possibly discolored and possibly shriveled." "Frankly," Williams said, "Illinois agriculture is faced with so many variables this year, almost all on the negative side, that we just don't have the experience to predict this thing on the nose. All I can say for sure is crop yields are going to be down quite a bit." Continued low temperatures could produce more crop damage, Williams said. "When the crops start coming in for weighing in about a month, we will know exactly how badly we've been hit by the unusual weather," he said. FmHA Guarantees Livestock Loans To County Farmers Livestock farmers and agricultural lenders in the Boone-Cook-DeKalb-DuPage- Kane-Lake-McHenry and Winnebago county areas are reminded of loan guarantees available under the new Emergency Livestock loan program. Farmers Home Admin i s t r a t ion County Supervisor Becker reports that the 80 percent loan guarantee is available without charge to lenders providing needed credit to livestock producers. Mr. Becker emphasized that authorized loan purposes are broad. Funds may be used to purchase feeder livestock or they may be used for many purposes directly related to producing feed or replacement livestock. Eligible livestock farmers are those receiving more than half their gross income from livestock or l ives tock p roduc t s and spending more than half their time operating the livestock enterprise. The guarantee may be issued on loans with maturities up to 3 years, with possible 2 year renewals. These extended terms are available even for livestock operators who customarily borrow money for shorter production periods, nils is made possible through special agreements for use of the proceeds to maintain the level of livestock production. County Supervisor Becker said. "I will be glad to meet with any lender or group of livestock producers wishing to know more about this new program." Lenders may obtain Guarantee applications and fu r the r in fo rmat ion by contacting Robert Becker at the Farmers Home Administration in Belvidere, Illinois.
