FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Oct. 9, 1924) Relatives from a long distance away were in this city last Sunday to be present at the e i g h t y - f i f t h b i r t h d a y anniversary of one of McHenry's oldest citizens, Mrs. Alsena Smith. The event was held at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Robert Thompson, on Main Street. It will probably be news to most of the members of the McHenry County club to know that their organization is now a member of the green section of the U.S. Golf association, the a c k n o w l e d g e m e n t o f membership having been received by President Richard B. Walsh. Mrs. D.G. Wells passed away at the family home in this city last Sunday morning following an illness of more than five years. The two surviving members of her family are the doctor and a son, Glen W. Lewis McDonald who resides on one of the Hanley farms suffered a painful injury last week when he was kicked in the face by a cow, the kick resulting in a broken right jaw bone and the loosening of three teeth. With Mr. Koerner as scout master the Scouts may even have a band before the year is over. Two new members havt joined, they are Leo Herbes and Herman Steffes. The names of the Scout patrols are the Eagle, the Bobwhite and the Owl. Only a small crowd of fans gathered at the local baseball park last Sunday afternoon to see the McHenry outfit clean up Nick Keller's of Waukegan by a count of 10 to 4. Five masked bandits all armed and appearing desperate held up and kidnapped Tony Kredler of Chicago a collector for the National Tea Co. stores in this district and robbed him of $800 south of Antioch. A dance for the benefit of St.. Mary's church will take place at the Fox Pavilion Oct. 17. Elmer Freund and his gang are going to furnish the music. Joe Regner has been suffering from a couple of cracked ribs and bruises sustained when he was thrown from a donkey during the donkey ball game. About twenty men on the relief rolls are employed by road commissioner "Butch" Freund on the roads of the township.
