YMCA Youths Hear Discussion On Government Ten high school students along with Advisor Dr. James O'Laughlin of Crystal Lake listened intently to the special guests Rep. Cal Skinner, Jr. of the 33rd Legislative District and Ms. Betty Lou Reed, candidate for state representative who spoke of their ideas and understandings of what the Legislative branch of state government means to them. After a short discussion about things that concern these young people and their understanding of politics, the young people engaged in extensive discussion of students being elected to school boards, and the improprieties of the state requirement in high school physical education programs. In the coming weeks, they will try to find with the help of the special guests a particular subject for a mock piece of legislation that they will develop for the final test of the Youth and Government Program - that being the presentation of their bill to the youth legislature which will convene in Springfield in April HEARING AIDS Richard Stoll has - been « serving McHenry County for over 15 years. <5ffic« hours 9:00 am to 6:00 pm daily. Would not people in general - and we ourselves - benefit greatly if we heeded these thoughts of ancient braintrusters and paid less attention to philosophies of some present day brainwashers? . . .(Your comments a r e w e l c o m e , a s i n d e e d t h e y a l w a y s a r e . ) . . . Marian Central Teacher Writes - Own Textbook Mrs. Shirley Scheiner of Marian Central Catholic High School's Math Department could not find a Freshmen textbook to her liking, so she did the only logical thing, she wrote her own! The project began two years ago when Mrs. Scheiner felt there was a need for a text which would be appropriate for the average student and for those who were experiencing difficulty with Math. Other reasons given by Mrs. Scheiner for the writing of the text were 1) To use arithmetic and the order of operations as a model for Algebra; 2) to provide students adequate examples in class problems and exercises to learn basic algebraic^ procedure; and 3) to use as few "rules" as possible and present Algebra so that topics follow each other naturally and build on each other. Marian Freshmen Math students are now in their second year of using the text and their reactions have been favorable: "It's easy to follow," "I like the examples in the book; they're easy to recall," and "I can really see the relationship now!" Yet so much creativity-- so much "seeing"--is often lost as we grow older and the complexities of life sweep over us. When a child confronts nature, he isn't in a hurry. He takes time to study each blade of grass, to appreciate the colors of a butterfly, to marvel at a flower or the soft fur of a kitten. We shouldn't lose this sensibility as we grow up. God created the world, but man has often abused it. So stop- once in awhile--and look, feel and listen. This is commun ion, restoration . . . like the spirit you find in church.
