STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD When Barbara Vogel, a Wonder Lake resident, died of leukemia, early in July, her friends and family established a memorial fund to be administered by Sherman hospital in Elgin. TTie first fund raising effort Of this newly farmed group will take place on Saturday evening, Oct. 12. at Christ the King parish hall in Wondher Lake. It is the hope of those involved in the preparation of this dance that this will be just the beginning of a perpetual memorial dedicated to helping victims of the disease that took the life of this outstanding young woman. Barbara Vogel graduated from Woodstock high school in 1954, she had a deep interest in education and during her college and graduate study years she found the field which gave her the most satisfaction and the one which she was able to offer the most to others and it was special education. After she received her Master's degree, she taught special education classes for the physically and-or emotionally handicapped children. In 1971 she was named Regional Coordinator of the Northwest Team for Exceptional children and worked out of an office in DeKalb. Barbara was one of four educators who were responsible for the programs which would be of greatest value to special education students. Barbara found joy and great fulfillment in sharing her knowledge with the people who worked directly with the children. It was her particular job to be aware at all times of the programs being followed by various schools to be sure that the curriculum answered the needs of the child. In late November of last year, Barbara Vogel was stricken with acute myloblastic leukemia. Throughout the winter she fought a losing battle, despite the fact that she was suffering from cancer and the effects of exhaustive series of Chemotherapy drug therapy, she continued to work from the hospital and from her home, using a phone and dictaphone machine to keep in touch with the work she loved. When spring came around, Barbara accepted her impending death and planned for the future of others who would live after her. She gave permission for an autopsy, hoping that a microscopic study might possibly help to answer some of the questions surrounding acute myloblastic leukemia. She asked that, instead of flowers, those who wished to remember her contribute to a fund dedicated to medical research. The Barbara A. Vogel Memorial Fund to be administered bv Sherman Hospital was given life because a terminally ill woman felt compassion even as she faced death. In the weeks following Barbara's death, contributions came in from cities, towns and villages throughout the state. From a few dollars to a thousand, the offerings represent the deep feeling felt for a courageous young woman. The chairman of the dance on Oct. 12 is Gene Jakubowski of White Oaks Bay in Wonder Lake, He is being assisted by PearlMathews,a life-long friend of "Barbara's Mr. . and' Mrs. OAS BONUS We specialize in Fulljr automatic cart iron boiler* with m ture for economi cal, dependable operation.
