/"PAGE • - PLAINDEALER-FRIDAY. OCTOBER 4, It CHEERING-for a homecoming victory. These girls will be cheering the McHenry Warriors for a win over the Crystal Lake Tigers tonight. It's Homecoming and McHenry has a 4-0 conference record. The girls are: Amy LeLeux at top center, displaying a TD sign. L-r in the air are Kathy Sherman, Debbie EARL WALSH So I Hear This crazy race in both major j baseball leagues gets a fellow i in a whirl. Just watched the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cubs 6-5 in a game that had players up as high as if it was the seventh game in a World Series. Montreal beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2. Now the Pirates £ are one game ahead and sure of a tie in the red hot race. The Los Angeles Dodgers have won it in the National League West with a well balanced team, the great Mike Marshall as a relief pitcher, and Cool and Calm Walter Alston managing. If TV doesn't give us the wrong angle, Umpire Shag Crawford called three low pitches strikes on Cub batters. Then called one on the Pirates. He may be having trouble with his bifocals. We wish some ball players would visit a barber before spring training rolls around again. Their caps don't fit. SPORTS EDITOR--I Jim Kaat just won No. 21 for the Sox. And they picked him up at the waiver price. Paul Popovich, former Club and the best utility man in the game, hit a pinch triple for the Pirates and is looking forward to a World Series check. We will be "on tour" Wednesday so will have to catch up on the baseball scramble upon our return. Right now it looks like Baltimore will lead the American League West. Must say the Yankees got the most out of the least, but will probably come home a close second. John Busscher takes the National League (naturally) and gives us a chance to get even with him after our All-Star bet. We feel real confident. No matter who wins, we have to get up and go to work the next morning. High school students are busy building floats and getting ready for Homecoming Friday. Interest also runs high on who will be King and Queen. The Crystal Ball Man says the Warriors will win the game from the Tigers of Crystal Lake. We think so, too--after a battle. We think the Tigers will come up tough for this one. Open that trap door, fellows. We'll be climbing up that mountain Friday night. Home again. There are champs in all divisions for playoffs on the way to the World Series. And our Sox finished with a .500 record. Wait 'til next year. When it comes to car leasing we wrote the book. Up to this point Ron and Ben were trading leads with Ben making some great recoveries after Ron seemingly had the hole won. It was a great match and our congratulations to the winner. In another close match, Doc (down the middle) Carelli beat Bob Schmaling to win the Class C division of the tournament. This match found two great competitors meeting head on but the steady play of the good doctor was more than Bob could compete with. The trophy Party and dance will be held at the club on Sat., Oct. 26. Our congratulations to Bob Blaney on his retirement and we understand he is already making plans to practice more as he is determined to win a trophy next year. According to Letty he should also practice his gin rummy. Good luck, "Blaine". 0 SH0WPLACE MMGMMiI is® Jus ten, Denise Higgins, Diane Smith and Dawn Welch. McHenry and Barrington are tied for first place with 4-0 records. L-r are Steve Kasprzyk, Tom Ludwig, Don Rode, Jeff Damiani and Day. Kasprzyk will start the game as the Warrior quarterback. (STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD) Waniois Meet Ciystal Lake In Homecoming Game Tonight By Dick Rabbitt Coach Bill Day and his "Fighting Warriors" are ready to play the poor host in the homecoming game tonight against the visiting Tigers from Crystal Lake. Coach Day is well aware of the evils of homecoming. Parades, floats, bonfires, dances and dates sometime take over the mind of the football squad, instead of the real issue, the game itself. You can be sure that the coaching staff is doing everything possible to remind the Warriors, that they are tied for the top spot, and a win Friday night is a must for the team. In the Tigers the Warriors will be meeting one of the biggest, if not the biggest team they will face all season. The Tigers have 12 lettermen returning, including 12 regulars from last year's 6th place team. The Tigers started out the season with a rousing win over North Chica'go, then got sidetracked by Dundee. Next they were humbled by Zion 55- 2, and last Saturday beat Mundelein in the rain 14 to 12. The Crystal Lake line, both on offense and defense, averages over 200 lbs. per man. That is a lot of beef for the Warrior forward wall to move around the field. Reserve halfback Jim Stalo has been the sparkplug of the Tiger attack. Last Saturday he scored both touchdowns in the Tiger win. In talking with Coach Bill Mack this week he commented, "I am impressed with the scouting report on the Warriors". From all reports he added, "they are playing hard nose football, and their big win over Lake Forest has forced us to do some revaulating of our defenses". The Richmond Trailblazers had a fantastic picnic on September 15th at the Richmond Park. The club provided the hotdogs, hamburgers, beer and pop with the members supplying some delicious dishes to pass. T h e E n t e r t a i n m e n t Committee headed by Shirley Hauck went all out this year to make this picnic really fun for all. Volleyball nets were there for everyone to enjoy anytime. Games for kids and adults included a three - legged race, a wheelbarrow race, and egg toss, tug - of - war, apple eating, a water balloon toss, and a race where people dressed in complete snowmobile outfits. Some of the younger kids were able to dunk for apples. Candy, gum, and balloons were handed out to all the kids compliments of the Entertainment Committee. Maggie Arseneau and Bev Schmitt deserve much of the credit for supplying the materials, ideas, and organization for the games. The "HOT LINE" is already in working condition for this year so if you want "information for your trails" be sure to call. The first meeting of the Trailblazers will be October 3rd at 7:30 sharp. Again this year the Andre's Steak House will be the place for all meetings. All Jim Burke's 36 Leads Golfers To Win Over Crown Team 157-160 Junior Jim Burke carded a 36 at McHenry Country Club on Monday to lead the McHenry golfers to a 157-160 win over Crown. Bob Buenzli carded a 39 Marty Zeller a 40, and Vic Santi a 42. The sophomores won their 12th straight dual match as they defeated the Crown sophomores. As I have mentioned before, the Warriors are for real. They made believers out of 4 opponents, and must not be taken lightly by anyone. With the exception of tackle Neal Barry, who was injured in practice several weeks ago, the Warriors are at full strength. With the anticipated big crowd on hand, you can look for the mighty Warriors to add another scalp to their belts. Let's all be out there tonight and encourage the Warriors on to WIN NUMBER FIVE of the season. The crystal ball got cracked again last week. As the saying goes "Anything can happen in the North Suburban and usually does" was again the factor last week. This week I'm again picking the Warriors. The poise and confidence they displayed at Lake Forest will be a hard factor to beat. Dundee over Crown (Cards will bounce back from their loss to North Chicago, although Crown is on a 2 game winning streak.) Barrington over Mundelein (Mustangs no match this time for the Broncos). Libertyville over Lake Forest (Cats out to avenge only defeat last year). Zion over North Chicago (Feel sorry for the Hawks as ZeeBees will be out to make amends from Barrington loss). Sophs Lose To Lake Forest The McHenry sophomore football team lost to the Lake Forest Sophomores by a score of 29 to 19. Lee Steinsdoerfer's three touchdown passes to Loren Klapperich were the highlights for the Soph's. The members should try to attend these meetings. i Remember -- THINK SNOW!! Freshmen won their third game against one loss as they defeated the Lake Forest Frosh 18 to 6. Senate and House back anti-inflation panel.
