Lucas, county executive director, "and economists from USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS) expect soybean prices to rise during the marketing year." A summary of ERS's fat and oils situation, released Sept. 26, in Washington, cites two reasons for record - high average soybean prices during the 1974-75 marketing year. The soybean supply looks down 10 percent from last year, and soybean acreage might not expand during 1975, because corn and other feed grains may attract farmers more than soybeans next spring. "Supply - demand looks like this for the present year," continued Lucas. The 1974-75 soybean supply totals an estimated 1.49 billion bushels, the sum of a 1,316 million bushel crop plus a 172 million bushel carryover. The Economists appraise use at 1.4 billion bushels. This implies a minimal carryover on Sept. 1, 1975. These estimates are based on the September, 1974, crop report reflecting conditions Sept. 1. Since then, two damaging frosts struck soybean areas. Domestic crushings and exports create most of the demand. The domestic soybean industry may crush around 800 million bushels, compared to 820 million bushels during 1973- 74. Fats and oils situation sees exports down possibly sub stantially, from the 545 million bushels record of last marketing year. Tight supplies and high prices will likely reduce ex ports. Also, foreign supplies of fats and oils, such as Brazilian soybean, Peruvian fish, and Philippine coconut oil, are greater than last year, reducing the need for U.S. soybeans. The fats and oils situation summary also highlighted other commodities: Cottonseed supplies total a little over 5 l£ million tons, up slightly from last year. Prices are expected to average sharply over last years $100 per ton. Lard output may be down slightly from 1973-74's 1.3 billion pounds. Flaxseed supplies total 17 million bushels, 15 percent below last season and the smallest on record Farmers are expected to average sharply above the.$8 per bushel of last year. SLAFF OF THE WEEK v "m&P "George Just loves the new ran lamp* you got Mm, Mother."
