These courses, consequently, have been added to the curriculum for the 1974-1975 school year. Shortland 1, consumer economics, and recordkeeping are taught on the senior class level Shorthand centers on development of basic skill and speed in dictation and tran­ scription, while record keeping includes money management, income tax, fiscal policy, operation of the Federal Reserve, and the principles of supply and demand. All students are required to take one semester of consumer economics and may elect to take either one or two ad ditional quarters of the basic course of economics. Basic course topics are insurance, installment credit, money and baking, advertising, and consumer protection In addition to the new courses, two levels of typewriting for sophomores, juniors and seniors, along with a bookkeeping course also for juniors and seniors remain in the business education curriculum. Sophomores for the first time are being offered an Introduction to Business course with emphasis on banking, saving and investing, credit buying, communication and transportation, and ad­ vertising. All freshmen are assigned to the focus program which in­ cludes a five week "mini" course in basic typewriting skills. The keyboard, business letters, envelopes and footnoted reports are included in this course. Carmen McLean. George Parthemore and Darlene Gorski are members of the County Newman Club To Elect Officers Oct, 22 The next meeting of the McHenry County Newman club will be Oct. 22 at 12:30 p.m. in Room A-121 at McHenry County college. At this meeting, the Newman mem­ bers will elect officers. Bob Zientink is preparinga format of officers' duties and respon­ sibilities. The following Tuesday, Oct, 29, at 12:30 p.m. in the IIT office, the topic of discussion Business department. Miss McLean teaches the shorthand typewriting and bookkeeping courses while Mr. Parthemore is the consumer education, recordkeeping, and business instructor. Mrs. Gorski is the freshmen typing teacher. will be "What Does it Mean to be a Priest and Nun in Today's World." Father Holdren, chaplain of Newman at MCC, will tell of his decision to become a priest, and Sister Martha, a Dominican sister of some 60 years, will tell what it has been like to be a sister of St. Dominic. Discussion and questions will follow. The talks are open to MCC students and discussion and question period will follow The Newman members felt that there were many pressing issues of the day and so wanted to have some type of op­ portunity to express their views in the midst of a changing world Discussions will occur each Tuesday unless there is a meeting. The Newman Club is represented on the Inter- Organizational council at MCC by Bill Barry. Activities include a dance at the American Legion hall, corner of Oak and Woodstock streets,- Crystal Lake, Satur­ day, Oct. 19, from 8:30 p.m. - 1 a.m. This eveitt is for those 19 years of age and up, as the bar will be open. On Saturday evening, Oct. 26, thd Newman club is planning a Mass, which members hope to have a least once a month. This Mass fulfills the Sunday obligation. It is scheduled for 10 p.m. at St. Thomas Pierson street church, corner of King and Pierson streets, Crystal Lake. A social will follow in the hall below the church. During the day Father Holdren's office is presently in the IIT office directly inside the Administrative wing. BENEFIT CONCERT The Samuel Dent Memorial Jazz band at the Woodstock Opera House Oct. 25 at 8 p.m. is jointly sponsored by the Woodstock Opera House Community Center Restoration fund and the Woodstock Fine Arts association.
