/ 1934 1934 brought the promise of a New Deal at home, and gathering war clouds from abroad. "Soup line" America -- eager to win the Relief, Recovery and Reform that F.D.R. had pledged -- was not in the mood for conflict; she was desperately trying to rehabilitate her own staggering standard of living. Echlin, and companies like it, came through for the American economy, and for the 50 million citizens who had purchased autos during that era of prosperity a few years back. Moving its plant to New Haven, Conn, in 1940, Echlin continued to expand and supply a variety of up-to-date parts to keep needed motor vehicles in top running shape. At the same time, Echlin developed a revolutionary method of making service and parts more easily ac cessible for mechanics across the country. Through the Echlin Visumatic Business System the company would provide the auto repairman with an inventory of Echlin products in a specially designed cabinet -- right in the shop, saving the mecl inic time and money. As the imaginative merchandising method became ready for nationwide use, World War II began, and America set to the task of tooling up for battle. With the tremendous shortage of materials, and the need for all of America's help in the war effort, Echlin, like many other industries, became an important production center for military supplies. As an indicator of the corporation's vital role in the automotive field, Jack Echlin was appointed industry representative to two Federal committees, and served on them throughout the war. S2 FUEL SYSTEMS -- New carburetors, repair and re building kits for carburetors, PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valves for pollution control, and a range of other parts are marketed by Echlin to keep engine fuel systems in top condition. PERFORMANCE -- Echlin's high performance ignition systems, under both the Echlin and ACCEL brand names, have set a new standard of quality for performance minded car owners. mnnBi
