Trouble in the Mideast brews, and in 1974, swells to a crisis. Prices skyrocket. Energy supplies falter. And America slows down on spending . . . and driving. Echlin, realizing that this must be an era of con servation, has geared its production to keeping America's vehicles in good operating condition for a longer period of time. Its products are now helping those tens of millions of cars and trucks produced in the late 60's and early 70's to achieve higher gasoline mileage and performance -- vital concerns to all. A spiralling growth in Federal legislation in the 70's has created a need for far more complex automotive systems. Beginning in January, regulations will require the use of anti-skid systems for all new heavy-duty trucks. An advanced, electronically-controlled anti-skid system was developed jointly by Echlin, and Fiat of Italy. As the only independent after-market parts manufacturer with full electronic capability in both engineering and production, Echlin manufactures the entire system at its own plants. The growing number of drivers on American high ways during the last decade, as well as the manufacture of faster, more powerful engines, has led the government to establish stricter safety standards for automobile use. Today, federal law and regulations of the Department of Transportation require periodic inspection of all cars on the road. Some 31 states have an inspection program in operation, with others to follow suit in the relatively near future. Meeting the safety and emission standards of a still-growing body of federal regulations, is only the beginning of a challenge faced by all members of the automotive industry. And Echlin remains ahead of the market. With the advent of electronic ignition systems as standard equipment on new cars, Echlin was fully equipped to market their replacement parts almost as soon as they appeared. The unique system will greatly improve mileage and timing, while providing more reliable, and longer service. Fifty years in automotive replacement parts has seen Jack Echlin's corporation grow from the manufacture of an ignition gear to the production of over 10,000 individual parts. In 1974, Echlin -- a leader in the industry -- is represented by 17 plants around the globe. And Echlin continues to direct its design and engineering capabilities to meet the demands of the present. . . and the challenges of the future. August I , 1974 M r . * r e d e r i c k J .
