The growing number of drivers on American high­ ways during the last decade, as well as the manufacture of faster, more powerful engines, has led the government to establish stricter safety standards for automobile use. Today, federal law and regulations of the Department of Transportation require periodic inspection of all cars on the road. Some 31 states have an inspection program in operation, with others to follow suit in the relatively near future. Meeting the safety and emission standards of a still-growing body of federal regulations, is only the beginning of a challenge faced by all members of the automotive industry.
