wm$ mM w PAGE • - PLAINDRALER-WFfWESDAY, OCTOBER S, !«»* EARL WALSH So I Hear 'Twas a cold Friday night, but the McHenry Warrior football team came out hotter than a dime store pistol and romped all over the North Chicago Warhawks 44-0. The Warriors shouldn't have lost that double overtime to Crystal Lake. They tried to take out their vengeance on Barrington, but couldn't cut the mustard. Somebody had to suffer for that Lingering loss to the Tigers so along came North Chicago and they got whopped. Both the offense and defense shared the glory of victory While North Chicago doesn't rate high in the loop this year, we think the Warriors would have been tough for any team to handle on this particular night. Ken Ludwig, of the McHenry coaching staff, again handled the phone in the press box to spot flaws and relay them to the bench. At one point we thought the Warriors were in danger of _ SPORTS EDITOR J losing as we listened to Ken. Then we looked at the scoreboard and saw McHenry leading 32-0. Brother, it was cold outside! As Ed McMahon would say on the Johnny Carson show: HOW COLD WAS IT0 It was So cold that -- Dick Rabbitt wore his high school stocking cap. Coach Bill Day wore a jacket. Jerry Rogers had his curly top covered. Fred Meyer had to leave at half time (one of those rugged individuals). The cheerleaders wore jackets (never mind about those bare legs). We were thinking of the times when George Cina used to serve coffee in the press box. (It wasn't so good, but it was coffee). Drove out Route 120 West at five o'clock one night and was glad to get home. Traffic! Leo and Evelyn Blake took a 5000 mile trip through the West and decided if you can drive in McHenry you can drive anywhere. But. as Ray Smith once said, "When you don't have traffic in McHenry, that's the time to worry". Glenn Draper didn't think that was much of a World Series He must be a National Leaguer. The public seemed to want like all get out to see the Los Angeles team win They simply didn't play as good as the boistrous A's. The Dogers were the good guys in the white hats, but they left the gate open for the bad guys to break through. One thing you can say for modem day athletes is that they hold themselves in high esteem. Gene Tenance of the A's was yanked a couple of times and came out with that now familiar tune "Play me or trade me." And he with a .211 batting average! Then we have fellows who Pistakee Yacht Club Sailing Season Ends Jjfr * -W* ' ' <4 tw Ctark Peterson, skipper of Ike racing safl boot, "C" Hawk, pic tared above, and Jim McMahon won the 1974 overall season championship at the Pistakee Yacht club. •p&***% m by GATLORD •black/ while----commercial- RECOMMENDED PHOTOGRAPHER' •tp*eial events-- tceddinft candidt--aerial - 385-0170 385-8688 Commodore Don Culbertson opened the Sailors' Awards dinner recently, bringing to a close another sailing season at Pistakee. The P.Y.C. first opened its doors way back in 1897. This year they raced in two separate fleets, the Class "C" and Butterfly. The classic "C" scow is 20 feet long and one of the fastest racing type sailboats in the world. The Butterfly is of almost identical design, but much smaller. 12 feet in length. Except for special "away" regattas held on other lakes in Illinois and Wisconsin a few weekends during the summer, regular series races were sailed each Saturday and Sunday into September. Separate scoring is kept for both Saturday and Sunday, and in addition, points are tallied for the best overall finish combining both series. Before the fans had time to settle in their seats. Steve Kaspryzk tossed a pass to Ev Klapperich, and the senior speedster, with the aid of a key block by Steve Whitehead, raced 72 yds. for a touchdown and the Warriors led 6 to 0 with only 23 seconds elapsed on the clock After the ensuing kickoff to the North Chicago 23 the Flea Flicker Thriller Gives Sophs 19-18 Win Over North Chicago The old flea flicker is still alive The McHenry sophomores using this time honored play scored in the final minute to defeat North Chicago 19 to 18 Trailing 18 to 12 with less than a minute remaining, the Warriors went all out with the pass - lateral with Loren Klapperich on the receiving end. and he scooted into pay- dirt to tie the score .Jack Bucaroj all important kick was good and a happy sophomore team ^alked off the field with a win Earlier touchdowns by Lee Steinsdoerfer and Howie Useman kept the young Warriors in the ball game. With Hansen and Lane along with Kaspryzk carry ing, they managed to get to the Warhawk 29. but the only penalty for the Warriors of the night set them back to the 49 Then Kaspryzk with good protection hit John Dix for a pass good for a 1st down on the 12. In two carries Hansen raced into the end zone and Whitehead's kick was good for a 13 to 0 Warrior lead with 3:40 remaining in the initial period Moments later George Hansen intercepted a N.C. pass on the Warrior 37. Lane and Hansen picked up a couple of first downs on the Warhawk 35. On second and 10 Ev Klapperich. with the aid of a key block by dependable Mike Roberts, scooted around his own right end 35 yds. for the third touchdown of the period The P A.T. was no good and with 23 seconds remaining in the first period the Warriors led 19 to 0. During the second period both teams failed to generate any type of an offense, the Warriors with a 19 point lead trying once to make a first down and failed, and the Warhawks punting twice. Late in the period the Warriors took possession again for the third time during the period With time running out. Kaspryzk hung one in the air long enough for end John Dix to gather it in and scamper to the one foot line With 12 seconds remaining on the clock fullback Steve Lane bullied his way into the end zone for a Warrior 25 to 0 halftime lead On the second half kick off. Warrior kicker Tony Bentz booted the ball into the end zone <one of his three end zone kick for the night i A clipping penalty set N.C. back to the 12 With Keith Whitehead their leading rusher all night <41 yds.) making it to the 33 for a first down, the Warriors Don Rode recovered a fumble. On a linesman's dream Danny Voight took Kaspryzk pass on a tackle eligible down to the Warhawk 10. (The big tackle huffed and puffed all the way). Lane ran to the 4. and then on a keeper Kaspryzk raced into the end zone, and with Whitehead's kick good the Warriors led 32 to 0. With the kickoff again going into the end zone, the Warhawks marched to the 47 where they gave up the ball to the Warriors. In two carries Hansen had the ball on the Warhawk 14 Kaspryzk then hit a 14 yd touchdown pass to Hansen, and the PAT failed and the Warriors led 38 to 0 with 4:30 remaining in the third period WEENIE SQUAD TAKESOVER With the student chanting "WE WANT WEENIES" Coach Day serted his unsung heroes bodv THE in- the "weenie squad'" This is the group who night after night are at the mercy of the regular squad They play the opponents offense, and defense in prac tice. and take the bumps and lumps dished out, but are a vital cog in the Warrior machine year after year They held their own against the Warhawks Forcing the North Chicago eleven to punt twice in the final period, the "Weenies" took over on their own .'36 Tommy Ludwig made a first down at mid field Brian Nuss and Ludwig each carrying the mail made it to the Warhawk 24 Jeff Damiani passed to Brett Decker down on the Warhawk 4 At this time Coach Day inserted Mike Roberts into the lineup, for a special play "the guard around". I think Mike originated this play for Coach Day Anyway Mike failed to gain, and was taken out of the game, and then Brian Nuss scooted 4 yds into pavdirt for the final Warrior tally and a 44 to 0 win. Lest it be forgotten, the so called "Weenies" marched 64 yds. for the final Warrior tally. They are a great bunch of guys. Every team has its weenie squad, but I think the rapport on the Warrior squad is something special It was a happy locker room after the game, and a smiling Coach Day commented "I told them we could score on the first play" and the Coach was right on that score. The Warriors were in com plete control of the game from start to finish They did not punt once, and when can you remember when a high school team didn't punt at least once in a game. They gained a total of 454 yds., by far the best showing in years by a Warrior team George Hansen ran for 130 and caught one pass for 14 and scored 2 touchdowns Ev Klapperich had a total of 104 yds rushing and passing and scored 2 touchdowns The Warrior line was something else The offensive line opened hole after hole for the backs to run through The defensive line held North Chicago to a mere 89 yds. on the ground and 48 passing for a total of 147 for the night Next on the line is Dundee Friday night at Dundee Let's support the team as it goes for number six of the season PUNCH LINE O F T H E W E E K (?*>•». mayss ̂ \ 1 (?*>•». mayss ̂ i 3 ^T7?==::5==:;;=̂ & WEATHER BUREAU: nohprophet\ ORGANIZATION berg lass Showerstalls * Vanities and Tops * Gas , , & Oil Furnaces • Air Con ditioning, Central and Win dow • Hot Water Boilers \' > and Base Radiation * Sump Pumps • Water Softeners SEE OUR DO-IT-YOUR SELF HOME IMPROVE MENT DEPARTMENT THE BATH SHOP 3012 W.
