V View Handyman's Dream During Trip To Oregon Mike, the rectory cat who never traveled steerage. (by Father Wm. O. Manner, rector emeritus, Holy Com forter Church, Episcopal, Kenilworth). In the spring of 1971 our only chick, Mike, betook himself to Oregon. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois School of Architecture and is licensed to practice in Illinois and Oregon. He has settled in Eugene, Oregon, and has bought a house (an old one) on an acre of land. Eugene is a city of a little under 100,000 population on the Willamette river in the valley of the same name. He works for an Eugene firm. The point of our going to Oregon was to see Mike's new place and have a fortieth wedding anniversary trip. He says of the house which is beyond the age to vote, "It is a handyman's dream". The house is old but he has put many hours of work on it and it shows. The lot has elevation in the front and falls away to a creek bed now dry but aflow when the rains come. Five or six apple trees grace the place. Indeed, his mother made an apple pie from the trees for his birthday. They are not new trees and so lend an air of grace and permanence. At the bottom of the lot near the creek is a huge and mighty old oak. Half way down to the oak., is cool looking swimming popl. If you should seat yourself in the yard you are the immediate object of affection of two dog One large black Labrador answers to the name of Jules. His great desire in life is to plant his entire bulk in your lap. I like dogs but Jules is a rather generous portion' so that I feel hardly able to cope with his enthusiastic warmth. His feeling about life is that people were made to love Jules. Then there is Emily. Emily is a good sized, white, agile, Fox terrier. She has all the pep of a four - year - old boy and is not to be denied. Her idea of a good CHRISTMAS CUTS aA£s SuAgs~7fr The Personalized Look For Men And Women! She has high hopes that you will keep this up -- alas it seemed to me, for several hours. Emily salivates well. There is never a dry moment. Then there are two cats. Dolly used to grace the rectfiry in Kenilworth. She kept the rector's garden free from moles and chipmunks to say nothing of rabbits and oc casional dogs (if they were not too big.) Dolly has been around. She does not travel steerage. When she immigrated to Oregon three years ago she could not wheedle a pass either. You should beg me to write up that tale. There was a second cat, Wanda by name, corrupted from Wanderer and descriptive of her nocturnal habits. She was the color of a quilt my mother used to have. I had no tete - a - tete with her. She would retreat at any show of friendship into a blackberry thicket and as anyone would know she was utterly safe. Mike is like his great grandmother, his grandmother and his mother. Arthur, though he put in the time, has never been ad mitted to the practice of the Art. I apologize to my rector, the Rev. Father Arthur McKay, for the nomenclature of this college bred plant. Plants and animals seem to breed on my wife's side of the family. When I was courting her she graciously got rid of a small white dog called Victoria. Victoria was no aid to a courting swain. The horse was given to the Fair association by Roy Lang of Woodstock. The Fair association turned the horse over to the Cooperative Ex tension service Xo be given to a 4-H'er who displayed the best ownership qualities. Anyone interested wrote an essay discussing why he wanted the horse, how he would take care of the horse, and if his parents approved. With these facts in mind, the Cooperative tryside. We dined at home and out in places where the cooking was more expensive than at home. Friends would come in, as at the birthday party and other times. We were not written up in the society columns but the gatherings were friendly and sociable. We met a lot of attractive young people who all made us welcome. The guests would recount to us tales of Mike's repairs and improvements on the house. He is handy as both his grand fathers were with tools. I have trouble remembering which end of a saw you grasp. It is plain much has been ac complished. We were pleased with the whole set-up. Mike likes his work and is happy for a number of reasons and so are we. I hope to Sam Hill we don't have to wait three years to see him again. The 1974 Census of Agriculture, the largest agri cultural statistica1 project of the past five years, will begin in January. It will be conducted by the Bureau of the Census, part of the Department of Commerce's Social and Economic Statistics ad ministration. From Alaska to Florida, from Maine to Hawaii, farmers and ranchers will receive Extension Service Youth council made the decision, and out of fifteen entries Jo Ann Aavang was announced winner. Jo Ann is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Aavang of Greenwood. She is a member of the Greenwood Handi-Helpers 4-H club. census forms in the mail around the first of the new year The report forms are to be filled out and mailed back promptly. Farmers themselves have participated in deciding what information is collected in the census. Representatives of farm organizations such as the Farm Bureau, The Grange, 1" arrners Union, National Farmers Organization, and Farmers Cooperatives serve on the Advisory committee that recommends to the Bureau the questions that should be in cluded in the census. Three kinds of information are requested about operations during 1974: first, a count of farm resources, number of farms, area of farm land, acres of cropland and pasture, number of each kind of livestock and poultry, number of persons working on farms, number of various kinds of farm equipment; second, a record of farm products produced and sold during 1974; and third, selected farming activites during 1974 such as number of days of off-farm work by the farmer, amount spent for farm labor, for custom work, for feed, for gasoline and oil. To report this kind of in formation, a farmer will need to have a few simple records. The Census Bureau is urging each farmer to have his records of quantities harvested, products sold, major farm expenses and the like readily available so that he can easily and accurately fill out his census report when it comes. It is from the Census of Agriculture, conducted every five years, that data are taken to form the basis for programs of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Congressional farm legislation, farm organization policies, farm programs established and administered by State departments of agriculture, and many other services provided by colleges, business f i r m s , m a n u f a c t u r e r s , publisher and broadcasters. The Census of Agriculture is the only source of statistics on agriculture that are com parable from county to nationwide. It is the sole i of comprehensive data tabulated for each State and for the U.S. for farms classified by size, tenure, type of organization, market value of products sold, and type of farm enterprise. Every farmer's report confidential by law. It may be seen only by sworn Cempsj2 employees and may be used only for statistical purposes The mail census method -m reinforces confidentiality. And f it allows the farmers to com- " plete his report at his con- » venience with accurate in- 'It formation from his records. «« GUTTERS UNLIMITED SPECIAL AUTUMN SALE 20% OFF on all seamless gutters and assessories.
